My 2 1/2 yr. old cat, Lucky, is a long hair mitten cat. The last 7-10 days, she started acting strange. She's usually up on my lap several times during the evening. Especially when the phone rings and I'm talking. She hasn't done this in a week. Was staying in the spare bedroom and sleeping on that bed all the time. Her long haired tail looks funny. Don't see any bald spots on it but in the middle of it, it doesn't fluff out now. The last 2 days she finally started coming out of the bedroom when we are around and has been doing some playing. But she still has not come up to see my. I haven't done anything to cause her to be scared of me. I can go in the bedroom and pet her and she's ok with that. We do have another cat that's a year older than her. They get along fine and she's still like herself but Lucky isn't. Anyone have any ideas as to why she changed all of a sudden?

Yes, a quick change in behavior is a worrying sign... Has she been eating and using her litter box properly? What's her energy level like?

I will make an appt. to see the vet. There have not been any big changes. She does seem to be eating and using the litter box. I wonder if they can get the winter blues??

I would take her to the vet just to be safe. I would rather pay money to find out nothing is wrong.

I have never noticed cats to get the winter blues, but if she is, maybe you could offer her some "kitty caves" made out of cardboard boxes to peak her interest. Also, she might either be having some sort of internal pain, such as bladder problems, or external pain, such as landing wrong after a jump down, and the unusually harsh winter cold back there might be aggravating it. If so, when she jumps on you, or if you touch her, the pain gets worse she might mistakenly associate the action, or you, with the increasing pain. You might try adding a couple of extra litter boxes near where she hides, just in case there is some territorial dispute going on with the other cat. The plastic boxes that sell for about $3.99 at KMart work great - and if you can find some old "mud boxes" from a local tilesetter, the price will be even better. Please keep us posted! Meanwhile, sending {{{{healing prayers and vibes}}}} to Lucky and a cup of hot, e-tea in your favorite flavor to her worried meowmmy!

I had Lucky to the vet. She could feel that that her fur on her back has broken stubbles. She has not lost weight so we know she is eating and drinking. I had been off work for six weeks and when I went back to work, is when this all started. Dr. thinks she has an anxiety disorder! Had to give her a shot to relax her and will have to give her 1/4 of a pill every other day for a month, to help her through this period. Dr. said she could have a food allergy too. She has been acting better, but still shedding. It's too cold for her to be doing that. Hopefully, this will help.
