Just got home and I am much much relieved to have seen Toe. I cloced mileage and it's 35 miles and 45-50 minutes drive time. Not too bad. I stayed with Toe for nearly an hr and a half. He was so glad to see me. He meowed when I said his name as I walked in the room and instantly got up. I left him in the cage but opened it and it got as close to me as he could. I just stroked him and petted him. He kept flipping over and over working his kitty hands. I rubbed his belly which he likes.

After we petted for 45 minutes or so, I fed him his food. It ate it out of my hand. A half bowl full. I could tell he had nosed around in the bowl and ate a little but not much. So I rolled it in balls and he ate all of it out of my hand. He drank for me too. This food is supposed to dissolve the crystals. I am going back tomorrow and feed him again. They told me he has been drinking.

After he ate, he was so tired and full. He lay down with his coned head in my hand and went to sleep. When I left he was alseep.

He is a different cat. He will make a fine recovery pending his bladder and kidneys. They are going to take the cath out in a couple days...

What a relief.......

Jenn

ps.. I am thinking of feeding all the neutered males I have [which is 7] science diet CD which helps control the formation of crystals and stones. This is nearly a 100 percent male cat problem. It seems their urethra is longer and narrower than the females. Female cats hardly ever get this. So I am thinking preventing this is a good thing since it can be controlled by diet. I can feed the males in the enclosure and the females in the house.. The only males I would have to put in the enclosre to eat is Toe, Yellow and Hank and JJ. The others eat out there already. They are all easy to handle and they would get used to it ...... The price is not too bad. They have 20 lb bags for 39.00 at the vet. Does anyone have any idea how long a 20 lb bag would last for 7 tom cats? I go through approx 40-45 lbs now for 24 cats per two weeks. But that is Purina Complete and I know cats eat less of the Science Diet because it satisfies them more and they poop less.

Also........they told me that Toe eating dog food at times might have helped cause this. I am changing to set feeding times and taking the food up afterwards. Toe loves Pedigree dog food. His dog days are over...

I am so glad to hear Toe is doing so good. Don't beat yourself up over this. You did what you could. It's not like Toe could talk to you.

What a great post to read. I so glad that Toe is doing better.

If you can afford it I think feeding all your neutered males this special food would be agreat prevantitive measure.

You might want to check out this link: http://www.rxpetfood.com/index.asp?P...=Custom&ID=163

I've been reading around here, and I think that if my cats have to go back on a urinary crystals prescription diet, I'm going to try this one (my new vet also sells it
). My cats got fat on the SD, but on the higher quality Felidae, they are back to the weight they are supposed to be, and their coats are much better. I am actually spending the same or less per month on the more "expensive" food, than I was on the SD stuff
.
(I hope this makes sense- I am trying to type this and answer questions from a 3 year old like "Where do giraffes go potty?"
)

I'd also ask your vet if the dog food could have caused the problem- I heard, many years ago, that dog food could cause urinary tract problems in cats, but I haven't come across it anywhere since.- I'm not trying to make you feel bad about the dog food
, as I said, I only heard it once, but if it could be causing his problems, then maybe, maybe he wouldn't have to be on the prescription food forever, but then I don't know either if with male cats, once they have this problem that they'll always have this problem...just something to run by your vet...

Glad he's feeling better!

Jenn,

I'm so happy to hear that Toe Man is doing so well.
What a sweet little man he is, how wonderful it must have made you feel when he meowed for you and ate out of your hand.
He went to sleep with his sweet head in your hand...that gives me such a nice warm fuzzy feeling all over.

This problem with Toe Man has got me thinking that I'm going to put Elliott on a food to help prevent crystals.
He's our first male cat so I really never thought about that problem with the girls.
Frankly I think I might just feed him AND the girls a food designed to prevent crystals, even though it's more common in males I can't imagine it would hurt the girls to eat it too.

You and Toe Man have sure been thorough the wringer, but thankfully it sounds like there is going to be a VERY happy ending to this story.

Hi,

Glad to hear that your boy is getting better.

Does anyone have any idea how long a 20 lb bag would last for 7 tom cats?
Your boys might be bigger than mine, but a 20lb bag of CD, split between my 8 cats lasts me exactly 4 weeks. That's supplemented with one can of wet per day, split 8 ways. Now that I'm giving them more wet (4 cans a day), the 20lb bag will probably last about 6 weeks for me, maybe longer. I free feed the CD. Mine haven't gotten fat on it. They've been eating it for a bit more than a year.

I noticed that you mentioned going to "meals" instead of "snacks", with Toe's condition in mind. I was under the impression that it was the opposite - meaning that the urine pH takes a big jump (encouraging crysal formation) after a big meal, whereas the pH would stay more stable when the cat is able to nibble throughout the day. Maybe I have it wrong, but I thought that's what I had read.

My cat, Beandip started getting UTIs when he was a year and half old. He was blocked once, a coiuple of weeks after the first infection. Like Toe, he didn't give me any major 'signs' that he was sick. After all we've been through, now I can tell when he's having trouble...by how he acts - but it's still far from being obvious - so please don't beat yourself up. After a year of prescription food, 3 different medications, and numerous relapses (but no more blockages
) he's finally been 'stable' for 4 months. He still takes two pills a day. Hopefully we'll be able to taper off a bit after some more 'stable' time has passed. It's taken a lot of careful monitoring and patience...but we're on the mend now.

I'm so glad he's doing well. After everything I've read on these forums the past year and what Stoli's been through - I'm all for feeding Luxor and Stoli a food that will decrease chances of crystal formation - but are there drawbacks in doing this for a long period of time - they are both still young.

I used Purina One for UTI. I recently switched to Nutro since Lucky had the P/U surgery. I wanted to give him more nutrients esp for weight control. Mom still usses the Purina and no issues with her male kitties.

I think it's true that dog food contributes to the problem. One of my sister's cats (neutered male, 9 years old) is notorious for eating the dogs' food, and he's had a lot of trouble with crystals. Now he gets locked in the bathroom with wet food whenever the dogs are being fed, and it seems to be helping.

YAY TOEMAN!! I never doubted him for a second! And I bet he was ecstatic to see you! Just to add to the talk early about missing the signs...when Rambo had his bladder infection I didn't notice anything (and might have kept missing it) except that I was working on the computer next to the litter box one night for a few hours and saw him go in and out and in and out. Even then the one vet tried crystal dissolving food, but didn't put him on the antibiotics too...so he suffered another 24 hours until i pushed to get the antibiotics into him because the food wasn't helping.

It's scary being a meowmy....You want to push and yell at the vets to do more and faster, but you are so scared and distracted by your baby sick in front of you. And I always second guess the symptoms i'm seeing too....

You did everything right by your baby! all of your babies!

Snuggles to Toeman for me!

Please check with your vet before you do this. c/d does help prevent formation of crystals, but it does so by acidfying the urine. If your cat's urine is too basic (Polly's is if she doesn't eat the special food) then c/d will acidify it slightly to about a pH 6 to 6.5. But if you give it to a cat that has normal pH urine, it could become too acidic. If the urine is too acidic, calcium oxaelate (I didn't spell that right) crystals could form. Those kind of crystals have to be removed surgically and cannot be dissolved by a special diet.

thanks for posting this!!!! I knew there had to be a reason we all weren't feeding a special UTI food to our male kitties.

Jenn...this is just wonderful news about Toe.

Please start a thread in the Health forum about Toe's crystal type and diet....
you will get a lot of discussion about this rather common issue.

Also, if you use the search tool in Health...
you probably will bring up a lot of past threads about crystals, diet & water.

More Toe vibes on the way.

All this that happened to Toe really scares me because I have two male kittys! I am so glad that Toe is on his way to recovery.

I am feeding my two males nutro for indoor cats which is low in magneisum...also been wondering if I should switch them to the maxx cat because it says for UTI health.
