I have a kitten who is now six months old. I got her when she was about two months. I already had another cat who will be five soon and has been spayed since I got her two years ago. Her and my kitten get along so well; it's wonderful. But ever since I got my kitten, she would go up to my adult cat and suckle on my cat's nipples, having my cat 'nurse' her. It started out being all the time, but it's gotten to not be so often. My adult cat doesn't care and lets the kitten do it whenever she wants. It just bothers me. My kitten is way too old to be doing this, and I discourage it whenever I see it. I don't know what else to do. I don't want her to be five and still doing it. Does anyone know if there is something I can do? Thanks. -Rachel

If it getting to be less often, and the older cat doesn't mind, I think you should just let the cats take care of it. It sounds like it is naturally tapering off. In nature, kittens will nurse up to about 6 months old, although by then they also eat solid food of course. Your kitten is not actually too old to still want to suckle. It provides comfort for them. I don't think your kitten will still be doing it at 5 years of age! I would leave the cats alone for now.

You can buy a bottle of bitter apple at a feed or pet store and take a cloth, spray a little on the cloth and rub it on your other cat's tummy. That will discourage this behavior if you want it to stop.

Thank you both for the replies. I might see how it's going and see if it's stopping. If it gets to be where she's still doing it down the road, I'll try that bitter apple trick. That's a really good idea. Thank you both. -Rachel
