I have a 4 month old male Siamese and my boyfriend has a 2 yr. old female Rottweiler (neither one of them are fixed). We plan to move in back together in a few months. I've read a lot about introducing animals but I haven't found the right technique yet. My cat has a condition called Congenital Vestibular disease and the dog is a big baby & very curious. She's already met him once while he was in his crate and he was ok but she was going nuts!! What can I do starting now to get them familiarized with each other before the move?

The dog has to be very well trained in commands. When we brought Charlie home (Keno loves kittens), we put her in a down/stay command when first around the kitten.

If she gets too "pouncy" around the cats, we stop her by sit or lay down. Once the cats are full grown they will be ok - they know her limits, etc.

I'd keep the dog on leash and whenever she got too worked up, put her in a down/stay or crate her. Teach her "gentle", or "easy kitty" to get her to not be so jumpy.

As the siamese grows, they should get along. But don't let them together witout supervision till you are sure nothing will happen.

I'd also suggest getting them both fixed. Sometimes animals who are not fixed can be more aggressive.

GoldenKitty45, I've also been watching the Dog Whisperer to see how we can train the Rot. She was only trained for basic commands when she was a pup but now only what my boyfriend has taught her. I told him he should apply some of those techniques and get her fixed before we bring my baby over. The other problem is that my cat (because of his condition) is not quick. He doesn't notice a lot of things going on around him. I think his hearing is affected.

Jenny82, I am definitely considering that. I think it will help somewhat. Won't hurt to try. Thanks!
