Cat Q: why does he smell so good?

Thread Starter
I have a 9 month old male cat. Had him "fixed" at 6 months. He is an indoor cat although he will lie on the deck outside sometimes, but he doesn't seem to want to go any further than that. He has a natural sweet woodsy scent. He smells so good I love to cuddle close to him just to smell him. It almost smells like he has on perfume which he doesn't. Why does he smell so good? Is it common for cats to smell good? I've had a couple other cats when I was younger but they were female...and I don't remember them smelling so good. Is it because he's male? Is it the breed he is? He's just a solid gray cat, no markings, regular short hair, American I think, affectionate and good natured. But why does he smell so good?

Welcome to the both of you. Cats do have their own sweet smell and I too like to cuddle and sniff their fur. I have also found that they pick up smells from fresh laundry and other places where they like to nap.

I had a cat who smelled WONDERFUL! She was a LH calico, and I still have her mother. Her mother smells the same, but not as strong. Baby Bit would sleep in the dirty clothes hamper, and the dirty clothes hamper would smell WONDERFUL! . I still miss that lovely scent, almost as much as I miss her...

Welcome Julia and sweetsmelling boycat

to TheCatSite! What's his name? We'd love to see a photo of him...thanks for getting him neutered -- we love people like you who do the RIGHT thing!

Well, our human has lived with, loved, rescued, and advoCATed for cats all her life, and she thinks all cats smell fantastic, especially right behind the ears. It's pheromones, we guess -- that, plus the fact that we are so naturally clean, and are always bathing ourselves!

Dear Captiva:

How adorable Lizbeth is! That's a great photo of her with her toy...and yes, they DO smell sweet! Especially right behind the ears. "Le parfum Chat!"

Hi there we're so happy to welcome you and your kitty to TCS. I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay with us - we're one great big family and you'll find loads of friends here. If I can help at all while you're finding your way around TCS just click on my username and send me a Personal Message - I'll do what I can to answer your questions

It could be that your kitty is picking up the scent from the wooden deck that he likes to lie on. Lily and Tolly pick up lovely scents from different things they lie on. Still.....no matter where his scent comes from, it's a great excuse to pick him up and bury your nose in his fur

Twix's ruff/mane alternately smells like tangerines, pine tree, and outide. She's so yummy smelling!

Dear Cocoalily:

Omigosh! Twix is one sweet-smelling feline! We have some very perfumey girls here, too -- and the guys are no slouches, either. Let's face it -- cats smell good on the outside 'cause they're so sweet inside. Don'cha think that's it?

Thank you so much - Hopehacker surprised me with this lovely siggy when she saw this new photo of Lily and Tolly. That was so lovely of her

That's a very, very cute avatar you have there, too.

And yes, she's quite a talent! Of course, you have to start with excellent source material, too -- doesn't hurt, does it?

Hello and welcome to TCS!

Whenever I take Polly to the vet, the tech always says she smells really good. I assume she just picks it up from the house.

Dear PurrPaws, Polly, and Prego:

It's true -- they DO smell great! And may I compliment you on your gorgeous cats and lovely siggy. What a couple of cuties!

Thank you, that is very sweet. The current siggy was made by jcat, although I rotate them around every so often, as I have been blessed with many wonderful siggys.

Prego and Polly send purrs and headbutts to you and your gang.

Dear Polly, Prego, and PurrPaws:

Sure thing! Only giving praise where it's due...and admiring beauty where it's obvious! Wow, the black longhairs are SO magnificent! (As are ALL cats -- don't get me wrong! EVERY cat is a masterpiece!)

And yes, jcat is pretty amazing with the siggies! I really like the graduation of shades of blue -- it really sets Polly and Prego off to purr-fection, doesn't it?

I smelled one of my girls the other day and she smelled just like cookies and when they both lick me, it's not the gross human saliva odor, but a simple 'baby's breath'

Welcome Pearce1974 and sweet girls:

to TheCatSite and THANKS for sharing your wonderful photo albums with us, and diaries too! You're a star in my book for loving, adopting, and rescuing 'em. All 9 here are indoor-only, spayed/neutered, and rescued, 7 from "the streets" and 2 from "the dez". Sure hope your babes are feeling stronger now! We feed the brands your babes rejected, including Nutro (our favorite), Natural Balance, and also Solid Gold Katz-n-Flocken, Triumph, Purina Pro Plan, and Trader Joe's, among others, because the really good food is really the best to grow a good cat and keep him or her healthy. I know, they love the other kinds, but the results just aren't the same....

And on that OT, what do you think of coconut oil? Olive oil? There was one really, really good deep conditioner I used to use, but they musta discontinued it or something, because I could never find it again. Sounds like you have a good thing going with your own home brew, though, too!

Prego thinks he's quite magnificent He walks around with his tail straight up in the air. It's funny because he's a bit clumsy. But I just love him all the more for it.

WELL,

...is it any wonder? Wouldn't YOU if you were that magnificent of a cat? lol

And yes, somehow being a bit klutzy can just add to the charm factor. It sure does around here.

Not to leave out pretty Ms. Polly! She is quite a beauty in her own right, I can tell! Kisses, rubs, and purrs to both from all of us!
