My cat Tigger seems to always have bumps on his head somewhere or other and then they turn into scabs that can easily be scratched away...they only seem to occur on his head area and not anywhere else on his body

I dont understand what this could be....a skin problem but then why just on his head

He doesnt seem in pain even when u scratch the scab off ...just discovered a whole load on his neck now....its never a single bump either its like a small collection of bumps that in a few days develop in to these scabs

has anyone else had anything similar....my vet said lumps and bumps arent a big deal unless they get larger etc.

anyway any help would be appreciated as i dont really trust the vets etc here

Thnx

Is your kitty indoor only or does it play with other kitties? I've seen the small dry scabbing like that from scratches. It could be from rough play, fighting, or even the cat himself scratching his own head. Is there any chance of fleas or an allergy making him extra itchy?
If this doesn't seem to go away and can't be blamed on scratching you can ask your vet to do a scraping of the affected area.

could be many different things. Pixel sometimes gets cat acne, which presents as small bumps, mostly on her chin. she also has herpes flare-ups, which, for her, present as sores on her face - spots where the hair has fallen out & it looks raw. neither really sound like what you're describing, tho.
but, just in case - for the acne, use stainless or ceramic bowls for feeding & water. for herpes, treat with l-lysine to prevent flare-ups.

I had the same thing my kitty. I took her to the vet and she said it's usually caused by fleas. When we first got her she had fleas, but never had the bumps then. She searched our kitty and couldn't even find any flea dirt.

She gave us prednisone for her to take for a few days, and we gave her next 2 lots of Advantage 3 weeks apart (she'd been having it regularly before that). We also changed her food to an all natural diet just in case it was a food thing. The bumps cleared up within a few weeks, and have never come back.

The vet said it can take just one flea bite to cause that sort of irritation. So not sure what the cause was, but she's been fine since!

Flea allergy dermatitis can cause this. Fleas seem to have a preference for the head and neck, that's where you'll find most of them on a cat. Even though you don't see any fleas or any evidence of them, your cat can still have some. Do you treat him with a flea treatment?

all the three cats were treated for fleas etc when we got them but not since, as they are indoor cats and dont go out at all

he isnt itchy...well doesnt scatch excessively or anymore than the others.....the three do have frequent wrestling sessions tho !!
....i will take him to the vet and see what he says even though i know it will be a "dont worry its normal" again.

Thnx all for your advice

That really doesn't make any difference. You can bring them in, your other pets can. This sounds like a flea allergy to me. Is there any flea dirt on the cat at all? If there are any black particles, put water on them and if they turn dark red or reddish brown your kitties have fleas. Even if they don't have flea dirt, it could still be fleas though because with a cat who is allergic, one bite can cause lots of scabs as an allergic reaction. These usually occur on the head and neck.

Two of my cats had seasonal allergies that caused scabs of their heads and necks. The allergies caused itching and they scratched, causing the scabs. This happened in 2003 and 2004. They had Depo Medrol shots to alleviate the itching. The last two years they have been fine. We never did determine the cause of the allergies.

My cat never had bumps on his neck until I used spot flea killer medicine. Once the medicine leaves his body, the lumps disappear.

Both our cats had this and we used anti-itch/hydrocortisone cream from the dollar store and it worked....Rub it into their skin well, just a little dab and they went away
