Can you try to trap the dad to get him neutered now because a female cat can become pregnant within a few days of giving birth and a neutered male can carry active sperm for up to a month after being neutered and we'd like to avoid this mom cat from getting pregnant yet again.

I would normally advise getting mom spayed...but if she is that close, then I would try to see if there is anyone you know who is willing to foster this mom until she has her kittens and I would see if the same person or a different person would be willing to care for her current kitten. Mom should be spayed after her new kittens are 10-12 weeks of age. It is still really early in the kitten season so as long as her current kitten is healthy..you can most likely find it a good home.

Below is a list of low cost spay/neuter clinics in New York:

The kitten is probably weaned off the milk, and so mom is telling her child to start a life of it's own. It's perfectly normal, but no she will not change her attitude once more kittens are born, because her first kitten could be considered a threat to them (in her eyes)

If you can get the mom before she has the kittens, a shelter may take her and the kittens for you (call local shelters to ask) If she is friendly you can pick her up and put her in a carrier.

Do you know if her kitten is male or female?

When she has kittens try to get dad and her first kitten fixed, and then when mom stops nursing the kittens, get mom and her new kittens fixed. (if all are fixed, you wont have any more cats being born)

If mom and kittens are friendly to you, you should have no trouble getting them to a vet if you find the money to get them fixed.

Once cats are fixed, and if they are friendly, the chances of a shelter taking them are increased, although most shelters take young kittens.

my grandmal had one mom and 2 kittens. she trapped them and got them all spayed. she continued to feed them while they lived "feral" in her back yard using a shed to sleep in. one recently went away - was gone for a few weeks - came back and stayed a day - then left and never came back since. when she did "visit" for a day she was obviously well fed. what do cats do go find their own place when they get tired of living with "mom"? one of the now grown kittens has a lame paw so she is still around. i might add when the mom was spayed she was pregnant - so the vet must have euthanized the unborn kittens.
