Our 11 year old cat Smoke is an indoor cat. She has always used her litter box until about 1 1/2 years ago we had to take in her mom Tammy. They did not get along. Tammy would pee on the floor and Smoke would poop on the floor. We decided to put them in a room together to see if they would change there behavior towards one another. We hadn't had any problems for a long period of time. Tammy passed away about 3 months ago. So we bought Smoke a new litter box and let her run free of the house again. About 3 weeks ago she started pooping on the floor again. She will occassionally go in her box, she still goes pee in the box. When she poops on the floor it's always on the carpet and never in the same spot. She only does it at night after we go to bed. If you have any suggestions Please Help! We are lost at this point

First thing we did when our cat, Sophia started pooping in our kitchen was, take her to the vet to rule out any medical issue, and it's basically a behavior problem with her, she still does it 6 years later but not everday. Maybe ask your vet. Good luck.

First of all, take her to the vet to rule out any medical problems. While there, talk to your vet about stress induced fecal incontinence. It sounds like she may be stressed about something. (My older cat will do this from time to time when she's stressed out.) You also might try getting a second litter box. Some cats prefer to pee in one and poop in another. Also, if you don't already scoop daily you might need to start doing that. If you scoop daily, you might need to scoop twice daily.

It probably wouldn't hurt to pick up a couple of Comfort Zone with Feliway plug ins. Those combined with Bach's Rescue Remedy have tremendously helped my girl.

If you're like me, you've already tried all the conventional fixes like more frequent scooping, an extra box, etc.

I'm sorry to be discouraging, but I have the exact same problem, have tried all the "easy" ideas, and have had no luck. We've already moved to medication: tried Paxil, but it didn't stop the bad behavior and it ruined my cat's personality. We're starting Buspar today.

Please let me know if you come up with anything promising. With us, it's gotten to the point that we're considering "behavioral therapy", though I don't know what that is and no one else on this board seems to know, either.

Best of luck,
