My church is in the planning stages of starting up a chapter of a boy-scout like group. DH volunteered and I was hoping they'd start the girls version too, but it doesn't look like they are going to do that just yet.

Tonight was the planning meeting where they kind of decided who would lead what classes. So DH is telling me this person is doing this and this person is doing that. Then he says 'So they wanted a married couple to do the kindergarten through second grades so we've got that group' WE!?!?!!? Me and little boys!?! DH was told there are only a few kids that age....after I thought about it.....the 2 most active little boys in the church!

I love little girls. I can handle little girls..... BOYS!?!?! Little boys terrify me!!!

I guess of who volunteered to lead the different age groups, we were the only married couple not part of a leadership board or the man (a friend's husband and dad to one of those active boys) who will kind of administrate for the whole program in our church.

So here I sit....staring at a 3" binder called the Ranger Kids Leaders Guide. I wonder if I get to wear the blue shirt and nifty red vest too....at least it will match DH's hair.....
Oh and the tie thing too....

PERFECT!!!!
You are absolutely brilliant!!! And it comes in different pretty colors so I can like make art out of rowdy children!

I can just see me explaining it to my pastor (an adorable 83 year old woman from New Zeland) "But the boys wanted to be taped together!"

I think I've figured it out.

It's a conspiracy!

Give the ones with no kids the craziest 2!!! I'm on to em!

My nephews are 2 and 9 and my niece is 4. She is a sassy little red head at times but I can take that. (Helps that they live 9 hours away) I can take the 2 year old too. But by the time they hit age 6-7 I'm done!

I think our church may have had that type of group at one point. They do Awanas now on Sunday night.

Anyhow, I volunteer with the preschool kids. I lead preschool choir. And the things we go through (I have this wonderful lady who helps me) to get these kids to sing in front of an audience 2x a year.

I have this 1 little boy who is- well I guess you call it "spirited". He's a handful in class. Well- we sang in front of the church a month ago for our Lottie Moon service. I had 2 simple short songs. The kids get up on stage. 1 decides he doesn't want to be up there and throws himself down on the stage floor crying (mom was right near so I didn't have to get him). My "sprited" child, as we were singing "Away in a Manger" decides to take one of the mikes that was sitting up on stage and have his own solo

Everyone in the congregation starts laughing- making him want to misbehave even more. I did manage to get the mike away from him, then I moved him AWAY from any of the mikes.

Working with kids can be fun

Reminds me of when my son was 6 and wanted to join Boy Scouts. We go to the meeting at the local church, they are introducing the different leaders by announcing their names and they stand up. They get to the last group, the Tiger Cubs ages 6-7. No one stands up. The head guy calls the name again, still no one. Then I realize - he's calling MY name!
I look across the table at my son, who is trying his best to hide under the table and has eyes bog as saucers
. I calmly stood up, gave a little
and sat down.

By the time we get outside afterwards, he is already apologizing: "But Mom, if no one would be the leader we couldn't have Tiger Cubs, and no one else would do it."

It turned out ot be a GREAT year, with 8 little boys that were a lot of fun, and that he still remains friendships with today.

I got to be my son's den mother for his cub scout pack. We had seven in our group and all nice kids. I didn't want to do it at the time, but I'm so glad I did. It gave us lots of good memories and yes, not so good memories.
Plan activities that keep them busy and active, boys won't sit still for long. And trust me, the boys will be fine, it will be the parents that will take need time and attention.
Good luck and enjoy it.

Thanks for the advice/encouragement! One thing that makes me happy, the activities and what not will go on at church, NOT my house!
