The specialist mentioned something about inflammatory but she said she wasn't concerned about leukemia. . .
If it were leukemia, there would have been other symptoms (and they probably tested for it).
Like Tammie said, it sounds like some type of autoimmune disorder. Some don't fall into any already "named" disease - they're just "some type of autoimmune disorder."
The vet said some type of inflammation. Steroids are very powerful anti-inflammatories, which is how she would deduce that. But they also function to suppress the immune system, so you can't rule out an autoimmune disorder. You'll know after he's been weaned off of the prednisone. If it was an inflammatory problem, his CBC will very likely be normal once the pred is out of his system. If it's an autoimmune disorder, his CBC will probably be starting to look a bit funky (with his WBC count falling again).
Even if it is some unspecific autoimmune problem, it is very likely he'll be with you for a good long time since he responded so well to the prednisone.
IF his CBC doesn't come back normal after he's off the prednisone, after you begin treatment again (or testing again - or both), PLEASE get a second vet opinion.
I'm really hoping (and expecting) that he's going to be fine off the pred - everything popped back to normal so quickly ( !!!
). But again, if we had just stuck with the original vet with Tuxie, he'd be dead, because that vet was wrong.
I really don't mean to freak you out, because I really feel like everything's going to be OK. But based on our own experience, I just want to share ideas that may help - just in case.
Again - I'm glad he's fine and doing so well!!!!!!!!!!
