I posted here a few weeks ago about Smoky losing weight pretty rapidly. The vet did a blood panel which came back normal. He gave us some medicine to stimulate her appetite and a laxative to loosen any possible hairballs that could be stuck (she had that problem when she was two years old). He also recommended that we give her only wet cat food for a while to see how she did. For a few weeks, Smoky seemed to improve and was eating better, using her litter box and acting more like herself.

However, this past weekend, she stopped eating altogether and was very lethargic. She spent the entire time sleeping and would only rouse if I or my husband went in to talk to her. The vet's office was closed on Sunday and Monday because of the holidays, so we took her back in yesterday. She had lost even more weight by that time and I could feel all her bones. This time, on exam, the vet could feel a mass in her belly that he couldn't feel last time when she had more weight on her. He said it was probably cancer and she was wasting away inside. He told us he could do some tests to confirm that for us, but we decided not to put her through that. It was obvious to us that she was giving up and ready to go. She was not in any pain yet and we felt the most humane thing to do for her was to put her down before she developed any pain, so that's what we told the vet to do.

Smoky was a very loving friend for 15 years and had a very good life. She will be missed greatly, but will not have to suffer, so I am thankful for that.

Thanks for your good thoughts and prayers while she was sick.

I am so sorry for your loss. I am facing a similar decision as the one you had to make, except Oliver is only 7 months old. It is always hard to let go, but you did the right thing for your faithful friend and companion. Rest in Peace, Smoky.

Sorry for your loss. She had a good and loving home with you and is now over the bridge romping and playing with our other wonderful but missed kitties.

A number of years ago, an acquaintance was talking about his cat who had just passed on, and said, "He had a good beginning, a good middle and a good end -- and that's a score I can live with." Sounds to me as if that assessment would apply to Smokey, as well, thanks to your love.

RIP Smokey.

Very sad headbuts and oh, so sorry licks from KittenKiya's Clan.

What a wonderful gift you gave your baby. Peace. No pain. No more suffering. You are just wonderful and I know your baby appreciated what you did for her. Blessings.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You gave Smoky the last greatest gift of love that you could and allowed her pass without any further suffering and sparing her from pain. Rest assured knowing she loves you and that you will someday be reunited with her. May she rest in peace.

Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers. It has been very hard for me not having Smoky around any more. I actually had her twice as long as I have known my husband!! But the support I have found here has been very helpful.

One of our dogs is having a tough time with the loss too. Our younger dog, Annie, is just a puppy and it doesn't seem to be affecting her too much, but our older dog, Alex, is our "nervous nellie" and worries about everything. He is still looking for Smoky everywhere and keeps looking at me like he is asking me where she is. I think it's going to take him some time to adjust too.

Thanks again.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I know what a hard decision that is to make, I had to make it myself less than a month ago for my baby girl Alley. As much as it hurts to let them go, it is small price to pay to prevent them from suffering for even a minute.

Rest in peace little Smoky. If you see Alley at the rainbow bridge, tell her I miss her and love her.

Smoky will always be with you Cele.
