The weirdest thing...

First of all, I clean Trouts litterbox twice a day, and it NEVER smells in here.

I come home today, and as soon as I step in the door, I smell rank litterbox smell..faintly..

I think "thats weird"...

I open my bedroom door, and it REEKS in there like a nasty litterbox of 10 cats that hasn't been cleaned in days The door was CLOSED all day and there is no way Trout "went" in there. I got down on my hands and knees and sniffed around the entire room...NO SOURCE OF THE SMELL..

:censor::censor::censor:? It is so gross, what do I do?

BTW I stuck my head directly in Trouts litterbox, and it doesn't even smell remotely like the smell in my room.....

Are there shoes in there? Did you check the bottoms?

No shoes, there is nothing different about the room. Everything is the same as it was when I left this morning.

have you had any "sounds" in your walls?
A couple years ago an animal died in the wall of a freinds house it reeked like you wouldn't imagine. I can't think of a worse smell.

Hope it's not that
Maybe a dead rodent in the wall. Or a really old dirty sock somewhere!
That's really weird. Either something was tracked in, Trout had an accident, or something is in your wall. Sometimes smells can get into vents too depending upon what kind of heating and air you have at your place. Good luck with finding the source...

Ok well, If I go near the window, it smells stronger like cat pee..I wonder if another cat peed in the dirt right in front of my bedroom window..would it waft in? (The window is at ground level as its a basement type apartment)

Sure. Might be a male, which has stronger urine smell. Might have gotten a whiff of her and decided to mark your house!

Hmmm, would a male cat mark my house just by SEEING Trout? She does hang out in that window alot...

I think that happened in one apt I lived in.

The closet I had would really smell like pee whenever it was wet outside (damp, rainy, etc). It just had the ammonia smell.

Did you check and make sure Trout didn't leave a surprise for you under the bed before you shut him out??

I say this cause years ago when I watched my brothers dogs, I kept smelling poo in the computer room...couldn't find it until one day I rolled the chair...and found the dookie

It could have been an unneutered male cat. They will certainly do that.

You are probably going to have to get down on your hands and knees and start smelling every area you can reach. Trout could have had some "odor" left on her bum and scooted on the floor .....

But the only way to find out exactly where its coming from is to get down on your hands and knees and start sniffing ......... I wish Trout could take a pic of you doing it, too.

If you are in an apartment, it could also be that you have a neighbor with less than perfect litterbox cleanliness.
The smell will permiate walls if it goes uncleaned for long, worse with male cats.

Had this issue in an apartment I rented years ago, I swear my neighbors only cleaned the catbox once every two weeks.

Nah, I live in a house with no other cats...

I would put money on the fact that a male marked your house. I had an uneutered tom that use to hang around when I only had my 4 females and he marked my cellar windows and my back door as if to say he owned these females. I was furious!!! I had 2 males when I was younger that did nothing but contantly battle who was marking the TV and other furniture in the house and because of that my nose is very sensitive to cat spray and I can't stand it!!! That was why - I wound up with 4 females. I was afraid to take that chance with a male.
cat spray is potent! It stinks awful!! I would bet money on it that's what it is.
Go outside to the window and you'll be able to see if it's been sprayed. It will have a faint tinged color to it and it might even shine a bit like it's still wet.

I think you might be right you know..I am going to look tomorrow in the daylight. I hope I can just wash it off with water...EW!

I agree that a cat used the outside of your window as a litter box. When I lived in the basement of my mom's house I'd occasionally have the same problem. The outdoor ferals thought the soft soil in front of the window was such a nice place to pee

We ended up putting chicken wire on the ground in front of the window. They didn't like the feeling of it under their feet and peed somewhere else.

HTH!

Water won't work.... it takes some potent stuff like Petenzyme to get rid of that smell.

It's some nasty
I can't stand the smell of cat spray.
Like I said for me it's totally because of the way I grew up. For most folks it's bad, but not stomach churning.
Did you know that there's even a bush that smells like cat spray?? I don't know the name of it, but everytime I pass one my stomach churns. I pointed it out to my mother once and she couldn't believe it - she said I was so right. It's some kind of evergreen bush and it reeks!!
Good luck getting that stuff off. Yuck!

I am reading this book "So you think you know about cats?" and it says that your cat can smell you before you get in the house....and they can smell everyone you've seen today or spent time with.... like, if my DH picked up our daughter from the bus stop & dropped her off at her Gramom's the kitties can smell on my DH's shoes or whatever that he was in contact with Jazzy, without even seeing her..... amazing huh? So, if it's a Tom cat....I'm sure he can smell your little beauty, even with your obsessive litter box cleaning!
