Does anyone know how to train a cat to stop clawing our furniture. We have tried this natural spray to put on the furniture from the pet store, but it doesn't seem to be working. I don't want to use a water bottle on the cat and raising my voice doesn't deter her. She is a lovely cat, otherwise. Help!!! Someone said using pennyroyal on the furniture will deter her. Any advice?

I don't know what pennroyal is. Is that some type of spray?

Do you have scratching posts around the house. If not get some they work wonders. If you already do try rubbing some catnip on them ever few days to encourage your cat to use that.

I have used a spray bottle of water to train Ping on what some things are not acceptable. And he has caught on quick and I only needed to do it a few times in each situation.

pennyroyal appears on my list of plants toxic to cats. I would advise you try other options- turbo scratchers, scratchers that hang on doorknobs, or ones that lie flat. The alpine scratcher is another popular device to redirect scratching just be sure you plug the hole on the side with duct tape. Kitties can get trapped inside and come to harm with the catnip fumes.

Also check our soft paws, or what we did here is we have a designated scratching chair. Bought at a thriftstore, it is the cat's only furniture they can scratch. They caught on pretty quick.

You can also get clear pieces of acrylic and put them on the corners of the furniture. Screwed down into place, they blend into the fabric and aren't that noticeable (just don't bump your shin on them)
