When I first got Shami he was bone thin and had a nasty worm infestation, so he needed much fattening up and Nutro worked wonders for that. But seems like the Nutro worked too well. He's only 7 mo. old and he's getting quite pudgey (kinda hard to feel his ribs or spine through his fat and he's developed quite a belly dew lap).

I tried to limit his food intake by feeding him more wet food (1/2 can a day) and a cup of Nutro, but he still wants more food and he's still packing on the fudge.

Is there another high quality dry food that won't fatten him up so much that anyone recommends?

Is he on kitten???

One cup is about the recommended for a 15lb kitty ... plus the wet your OVER feeding ... Most 8-12 lb cats half a cup of dry with a half can is good /..

You may want to move to adult food... most of the "all stages" are similiar to % of Nutro adult

Yep, he's still on kitten. What age do most people switch over? 1/2 a cup!?
Holy cow, I must've been overfeeding him like crazy before. When I free fed him the nutro when he was thin he ate around 2-3 cups of food a day.

I have had the same issue you did. Tigger is 7 months old and I now have him on a 50/50 mixture of Chicken Soup adult light dry and Solid Gold Katz-N-flocken dry (which is an all life stages food) free choice. He has actually trimmed down a bit and certainly hasn't lost any energy

Our boy Pico was overweight from the transition from kitten to adult Nutro Indoor Complete Care. He really started packing on the pounds when we got our 2nd cat so he ate by competition.

Right now, both of our boys are on 1/2 can of wet and 1/2 cup of dry and both are maintaining excellent proportions and have a lot of energy. After the initial food reduction, it took a few weeks for both of my cats to adapt to eating less but they're doing fine now.

He may be eating a lot because he was so starved before. Now he sees food, he eats it. I'd recommend taking him to your vet and having him tell you how much you should actually be feeding him for his weight and age. I had to do that for Lily when she was 7 months because she overeats too. Now she only gets 1/3 cup of dry and about 1.5 oz of wet food every day. She dropped some of the extra pudge and is now holding at a decent weight.

There's probably no need to switch, you just need to limit the food properly. If you do want to switch to an all life stages food, I'm feeding California Natural Chicken and Rice and I like it a lot. It's a very simple formula and is great for Lily who has some food sensitivities. My friends recently switched their multi-age cat household to Felidae and are loving it. I'm also a big fan of Chicken Soup but you'd have to choose between kitten or adult formulas.

I got the same issue with one of my kitten. Jumpy is only 7 months and he is about 11 pounds. My vet said he is a bit on the overweight side but I don't over feed him at all. He seems to be constantly hungry so I had him tested for worms, and it was negative. He gets 1/2 cup a day but I think he has been eating left over from Daisy. My vet said Daisy will forever be petite no matter what although she has gained some fat around her belly but she looks lean compared to my chubby Jumpy.

I am feeding them Premium Edge for kitten. Can anyone tell me how to calcaulate carbs based on cat food label? I just see protein, fat, ash, etc....

Thanks.

I would call the company or go online ...

but a rough calorie idea

protein and carbs are 4 cal

fat is 9

protien plus fat plus moisture = carbs

protein 33
fat 20
=
53 plus 10 mositure

63
100-63= 37 % carbs off that group
