I was at Petsmart this weekend and saw a bucket of clickers at the checkout lane. I seem to remember reading that cats could be clicker trained. Has anyone done this before? What did you train them to do?
Sometimes I wonder just how smart Petsmart is! This is something that takes a lot of dedication and time on both sides, as well as not for every cat or kitty owner. Basically it is used for training development beyond basic commands and behavioral adjustments, show cats, acting, TV. It is an association of sound and physical gesture by trainer, requested action of animal, reward for action requested.
I have clicker trained 8-Bit to shake. It took about three weeks of: treat, clicking the clicker, and shaking his paw. Scratch, my other cat, wasn't interested. He just went after the treats. It is possible to do it, but you have to be really consistent.
I have the clicker and the book but have yet to get around to actually doing anything with them! One of the things I wanted to clicker train Jaffa to do was come/stop when called as I thought it would be useful if he got out the front door.
