Why do my cats do this?

Two of my cats immediately lick themselves or bite at their front legs when I scratch their backs. They will contort themselves to be able to start licking. Is this common?

I hope not! One is a lover who seems to really want attention and petting. The other is a shy rescued guy who is so tubby he lives much of his life in the lower level of the house as he would have to hop a gate to get access to the rest. He doesn't crave attention but doesn't back off of it.

My last cat used to do that. If you scritched his back, near his tail, he'll start licking anything in front of him. For a while, I almost thought it was a weird kind-of sexual response or something. I don't know if he liked it or not honestly.

Cosmo doesn't do that. But if I scratch him there he'll tolerate it only for a short time before he tries to bite me, LOL. Assume it's not his favorite thing.
