A while back, while my boxer/chow mix Ginger was still with my family (she was 16, and PTS on Dec. 4th due to a cancerous tumor on her spleen that had ulcerated), I had posted about wanting adding to a basset hound to my family at some point after Ginger crossed over The Bridge, as we knew our time left with her was short, and we were looking to the future.

Well, on Dec. 23rd, I get this really obscure phonecall...the woman knew my first name, and I was a bit confused. Quite a long time ago, I was researching basset breeders, and had found one that we were interested in for future reference. The breeder had a mating between one of her champion dams and sires planned for January or February of next year (2007), and I had e-mailed her with a list of questions. Well, she called me, and informed me that my husband had contacted her a few days ago, and sent in a deposit to reserve one of the female pups of the future litter. She told me she normally doesn't do puppies as a gift, but since I made such an explicit and detailed inquiry into it, and we were chatting via e-mail for a couple of weeks, she felt safe to go along with my hubby's plan. We are scheduled to meet the dam, sire, and breeder in mid-January, and are free to select which female we want after the whelping. The pups won't be ready for their homes until May or June, so we have quite a while to plan and do a lot more preparation. Right now, the breeder is waiting for Maybelle (the dam) to go into heat, which will apparently happen soon, and she will inform me when this happens, and once they have successfully mated.

I am so excited!!! We've already been planning some names for the new little one, and have quite a list going:

Petunia
Olga
Dorothy
Rita
Nadine
Gertie (for Getrude)
Maybelline (since mom's name is Maybelle)
Thelma
Bernice
Lulu

So here I am, anxiously awaiting any new updates from the breeder!

Are the pups born yet? How are you picking out a female? Usually pups go to the new homes at about 8 weeks old - seems longer if you won't get the pup till April/May. Am I missing something?

Never mind - reread you post - they haven't even bred the mom - you are just getting to meet mom/dad now...right? Also what if she doesn't have a female (she could have all males) - will you get a male then?

BTW I like Gertie or Lulu

Yeah, if they mate in January/February, the pups won't be born until March or April, and then won't be ready until May or June. If there are no females in the litter (which is unlikely, as bassets have notoriously large litters, averaging 6-9 pups), then we get 2nd choice on a male, as there is someone before us that specifically asked for a male.

Wookie how thoughtful of your hubby!!

Goldenkitty, "reputable" dog breeders alsmot always have all the pups spoken for before they are born to be sure they go to good homes.

I vote for Flash after the basset on the Dukes of Hazzard. She was such a cute dog. And she had good taste she didn't like Boss Hogg.
