"Pay Waht You Feel It's Worth" Restaurant

Opinions? I personally find it an awesome idea, but can see how it could potentially be exploited by customers. Do you think that it will stay that way for a long time, or that unscrupulous people will put it out of business?

Hmm. I like the idea but I don't know that it will work for long. I know that I would go in and really pay what i thought the meal was worth compared to other places I have eaten. But what if you are not satisfied and don't leave enough to cover the food. I do know people will leave less than enough to cover the food they have eaten and take advantage of the system.

that seems like a great idea....but like the article said it may be harder in some settings, and wont always work. but seems to be working for them which is great.

I really love the idea that they don't turn down anyone who can't pay, and are willing to barter some work for a meal. That really is fabulous!

Frankly, it's not the truly needy who would take advantage of the system. But I can definitely see a group of obnoxious 20-somethings (think the typical frat-boy ) going in and eating out the restaurant and saying it is only worth a couple of bucks if that. I would like to think that the majority of people would play fair, though.

There has been one of these restaurants in Perth for many years - Indian food and just amazing. The thing about it is, the food is SO good you really do pay! Not that I wouldn't anyway - but you guys are right, I'm sure there are people out there who take advantage, but oddly, I don't think there's as many as you might expect. I think people could go with the intention of taking advantage, but when they actually get there and see what it's like, their consciences get the better of them.

I think it's a fantastic idea, but I don't think that it will be sustainable if they crop up all over the place, unfortunately. The few that there are around do well, purely because of the fact that there are not many of them - only one or two.

The location is dependent. I.e. you shouldn't place a restaraunt like this in an economically declining area (i.e. Metro Detroit).

Plus the clientele. I.e. what do you do about the overly picky eater?

B is exactly that. No food is good enough for him, or so it seems.

I think that is a wonderful idea, especially feeding the needy.

We have some restaurants. One is right by the University and caters to A LOT of college students. I could see us going out of business in 6 months doing it there.

Considering how many people I caught putting hairs in their food while I worked as a waitress, I don't think it will last that long. I do believe that most people are good people, but the few stinkers out there can make a pretty big dent.

I went to one of these for a friends birthday a few years ago and that really is what happened. Some jerks who had a starter main and desert felt their meal (which included steak) was only worth 5 pounds. We all felt really embrassed by them and gave more than usual for the tip (which they did not contribute towards either) to make up for their behavior.

I also think it's great in theory....and myself, I would pay extra probably cause I believe it's a good idea, and to help cover the cost of someone who maybe couldn't afford to pay....but I can easily see that some could abuse this privledge.

Maybe you could have a minimum payment of say, 20 dollars, unless you are prepared to say exactly what it was you were unhappy with.
