I am taking him to vet tomorrow but worried 4 year old cat is sick. Out of the blue I noted some of that black stuff in ears like when they get mites? But this time it was more pronounced. Then he got listless which is weird. Seemed to get better now is back to just laying around sleeping and no purring. Anyways, do you think it's something stuck in his ear? he is very protective of it too.

I don't have any info to help you but I'm glad to hear you are taking him to the vet. That's the best thing you can do IMO. Hugs and healing vibes coming your way.
Yes, a vet's visit is important, and you will probaly go home with antibiotics.
