Hi! I have a kitten that's approximatley 10weeks old. I just brought her home a female companion today that may be week younger than her. I let new kitty roam around for a bit then introduced the too. Old kitten won't stop attacking new kitten. I think old kitten is just playing but new kitty is hissing/meowing/whinning and everthing cat's do when they are not having fun. Vet said everything will be fine but i'm starting to have my doubts. Anything/Suggestions I can do or try?

Thanks.

Ideally, kittens should stay with Mama Cat until they are about 12 weeks old. That's when Mama teaches kittens social behaviour as well as other survival kitty skills. Don't feel bad if this is the case. Popular thought is that 8 weeks is plenty of time for Mama to teach her kittens everything.
In any case, Mama may not have taught your older kitten how rough is too rough.

If it is just inappropriate play, you can try startling older kitten out of the behaviour with a noisy shaker. Take an empty pop can and put a few pennies in it and tape off the top. When you see/hear that it is getting too rough, shake the can. Older kitten will start making the association that when she gets too rough, there is a bad noise that happens. Consistency is the key when training cats that any behaviour is inappropriate, so unless you can be with them all day I would separate them when you are gone and have supervised time together.

I'm sure others with more kitten knowledge than I will respond with suggestions shortly, too.

If they aren't really hurting each other, or drawing blood, I would just give them a few days. It's normal for cats to hiss and spit to let each other know who's boss. With kittens, the adjustment is much faster than adult cats.

I have them seperated now. They both have all essentials right now. I just put them together for a few minutes and there was only a little fighting. The only hissing was done at me for picking up the older kitty unexepectedly. I hope everthing works out cause I really like my kitties.

One of the ways to make this transistion easier is to take an old blanket you might have and give it to the new kitten to lie on for about a week. After kitty has laid on it, rolled on it etc, give the blanket to your resident kitty. Just lay the blanket on the floor and put a special treat or two on it, then just let the older kitty have the blanket for awhile, then switch the blanket back to the new kitty. This acquaints each of them with their smell. You can also feed them with a door between them, feed one on one side of the door the other on the other side of the door. They can smell each other through the crack underneath. Good luck!

Well, I hope it gets better soon. I'm really worried that older kitten is going to really hurt the newer one. They are going to be seperated the rest of tonight and probably most of the day tomorrow because I just can't get anything accomplished around here with the older one constantly attacking the newer one.

Best of luck adjusting your kitties to each other. I have a 6 month old male kitty and have been considering getting him a playmate also. I'll be curious to see how you make out. Keep us posted!

Hi to you and the kitties from Jedi!

Well, it looks like they are gonna be seperated for a little longer. The new kitty has a terrible terrible respiratory infection. Gonna keep them seperated at least till the end of the coming week.
