constipation

Help please, I have a 14yr old cat who has been diagnosed with early onset kidney problems, he is constipated. Can I give him bran to soften things up and if so how much would you give a 4.5kg cat? Would the best way be to mix it in with some wet food? He gets fed kidney diet dry food.
