Food Burial

Ever since I adopted Russell I've noticed all the dog-like behaviour he has but one thing confuses me. After he's eaten a bit of his food and sometimes after drinking his water, he paws at the ground as if to bury the food. (The vet said that dogs were more inclined to do this and never heard of a cat doing it, but after living with two dogs recently, I'm not so sure dogs do it.)

I've asked the vet this and the best explanation is that Russell may have been feral or his mother may have been feral and he's doing it to hide and protect his food due to a lack of supply in the past. I would have thought that by now Russell would know that food is always there for him and that no one is about to take it away from him.

Is there anyone else out there that can give some other possible explanation?

It's not always that they were feral or exposed to feral cats. It's a natural instinct for most cats. It is to leave thier scent and to keep other animals away from thier food. All cats (even pure breeds) are born with these natural instincts. Some use them and some don't.

Thanks Sandie!

I always thought that there might be a better explanation out there somewhere. The whole feral cat thing just didn't seem quite right to me, but then I can never know that bit. ^_^

My cat Ivo also buries her food, but only the wet food. It seems like she almost goes into a trance while "covering" the food and repeatedly licks her mouth. Sometimes, I have to snap my fingers to get her out of it. She is doing it less now, the longer I have her. Maybe with time Russell will stop doing it, too.

Phew, Russell isn't the only kitty that does this. I'm not too worried whether Russell stops or not...well actually if he stopped, it just wouldn't be the same.

And I still love playing fetch with him and the odd game of running around the house of chasey. :tounge2:
