I moved into an apartment that technically doesn't allow pets, but the landlord said it was okay as long as I kept the other tenants from finding out. My cat has always been very vocal. He cries a lot and I'm wondering if his cries can be heard by my next door and downstairs neighbors. I assume that they hear something, but do they hear it well enough to recognize what the sound is and where it's coming from? I live in NYC in a prewar building with wooden floors and plaster walls if that helps. Mahalo.

Maybe they're trying to be nice about it... and who knows what they're hiding :-)!

If they are bothered by it, they will let you know. I don't know why most people would care. I bet most don't know what apt it is coming from, either. Welcome to the site

I live in a similar building (prewar, plaster walls, wooden floors.) I don't hear the wailing Siamese cat upstairs. His neighbours probably do.

Oddly enough when the cats upstairs get running after their toys, it sounds like a small bowling alley. I don't mind it since it is not in my bedroom.

Probably you will be fine. You might ask your neighbours to let you know if there is a problem (depends on how well you get on with them)
