Oh yeah I love to bake, but only during the holidays. I've been baking for a couple of days...I've made chocolate chip cookies, gingerbread loaves, biscotti, chocolate covered pretzels, almond rasberry bars, peanut butter fudge, chocolate fudge, and almond cresent cookies. Tomorrow I am wrapping it up with sugar cookies, nut roll, nut horns and possibly an orange cranberry nut bread. I hope to have all of the cookie baskets wrapped up and delivered by tomorrow evening.

What was your best winter holiday celebration?

I'm thinking it'll be this one: my little sister is home from New Zealand (I saw her a couple of weeks ago, but only for a little while and I've missed her!), and for the first year since we started seeing each, my fiance and I will be spending Christmas together.

What was your worst?

Last year was the first Christmas without my Nana. It was ... weird.

Best holiday memory

The year we found "reindeer hoofprints" on our front porch!

worst holiday memory

I don't think I have a bad one.

What is the best gift you ever got during the season?

I'm going to have to go with my engagement ring! I got it yesterday, after months of waiting (we got engaged in October).

What was the worst?

A stuffed toy made out of real reindeer fur. Oh, the horror ...

Biggest Holiday Surprise

Hmmm ... I guess that would be the year my sister and I came downstairs and found that our parents had assembled a toy kitchen in the living room ... while we slept! The memories -- we had a lot of fun playing with that kitchen set.

Favorite holiday food

Mom's stuffing and Dad's gravy. Nobody makes 'em better.

Name three famous people you would like to get holiday cards from?

Sir Francis Walsingham (Queen Elizabeth I's spymaster ... ummm, I'm a geek)
Jim Lee (X-Men comic artist ... did I mention I'm a geek?)
Gary Gygax (co-creator of D&D ... I mentioned the whole "geek" thing, right?)

Who would you most want to be on the north pole with (santa doesn't count)

Clive Owen and a bottle of red wine.

Favorite holiday song

"Somethin' About Christmas Time" by Bryan Adams

favorite decoration ( if you have a tree etc)

The stockings my Nana made for us. They're huge, handmade and each one is unique. I'm just sad that J's stocking had to be purchased at a store, because Nana died before he could come home with me for Christmas.

Have you ever tried to Bake something special?

I made shortbread cookies one year. They didn't suck.

Do you make a special meal for on Christmas Eve?

No, we typically have a small dinner, go to the Christmas service at my mother's church, then meet up at my parents' place and eat appetizers until late at night. Are appetizers a "special meal?"

Do you open your gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

We used to open one present, from my Nana and Grandad, on Christmas Eve: it was a Christmas ornament that would immediately go on the tree. This will likely be the first year in my life that we won't be doing this -- although my Nana died in June 2005, she had purchased ornaments for us earlier in the year and so we still received them last Christmas after her death. This year I don't think my grandfather will be continuing the tradition: it was her thing, not his. Otherwise, we open our presents Christmas morning. Oh, and we'll be opening Christmas afternoon with J's family, and then again Boxing Day with more of J's family. Christmas never ends!

What's your favorite Tree? fake or real and what kind?

I used to think it was real or bust, but now that I'm older and fake trees have drastically improved (and now that I can appreciate what a mess real trees make!), I'm going to have to go with "fake."

Does your family have any special Christmas traditions that others might consider unusual?

My family always serves Jello with Christmas (and Thanksgiving) dinner. I think it's because my sister and I didn't like cranberry sauce when we were kids, so the strawberry Jello was meant to replace that. I didn't realize other families didn't do that until embarassingly late in life.

What was your best winter holiday celebration?
Last Christmas- it was the first Christmas since my sister and her family had moved back to Memphis. They were living with us at the time...and I did Christmas for the kids (nobody had a lot of $$) but it was sooo sweet just to have my whole family together again

What was your worst?

Two years ago- Before my sister had moved back to TN, they were living in Pennsylvania. It was my mom's and their brilliant idea to fly us up for Christmas. I had never been away from home for Christmas and didn't want to go. Probably should have listened to my instinct
We got snowed in for two days at Memphis Int'l Airport- geesh! The one time we have a remotely which Christmas in memphis, and I had to sleep in the nasty airport for two nights!
When we finally got to Cleveland, we got snowed in there too (stupid connecting flights
) By the time we finally got to Pennsylvaina- it was late Christmas eve night- we were exhausted, my mom was jet lagged, and we had to go to Wal-mart because none of us had presents, etc since we were flying. It really stunk. I swore from then on I will NEVER again fly during Christmas.

Best holiday memory
When I was younger, my mom had one particurally hard year as a single mom. She didn't have any $$ for Christmas, and somehow, some sweet couple at my church found out about it. They got gifts for all of us and took us dinner. It was the most moving thing. It was sooo sweet to see how much total strangers cared for us.
/ Every year after that we adopted a family for Christmas and did the Angel Tree at my church to help out families just as we had been helped out

worst holiday memory

Please refere back to sleeping in the Memphis Int'l Airport for two nights!

What is the best gift you ever got during the season?

My ring my mom got me several years ago for Christmas. It's a dainty (i like small jewerly) little emerald/diamond ring. It means a lot to me.

What was the worst?

Colin giving me that damn brown bra last year for Christmas and then giving it to me to open in front of my entire family-when I was thinking he was going to propose!

Biggest Holiday Surprise

Finding out that Colin is going to spend Christmas with my family and I this year.

Favorite holiday food

latkes, my mom's lasagna!, kosher doughnuts with chocolate, cookies, pumpkin fluff dip, anything my sister Monica makes
, coconut cream pie, corn casseroles...

Name three famous people you would like to get holiday cards from?

Ella Fitzgerald
Tina Dico
Kate Hudson

Who would you most want to be on the north pole with (santa doesn't count)

Colin and the Reindeer

Favorite holiday song

Angel Chorus (it's an incredable arrangement one of my directors did a while back of the song- it's absolute gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

favorite decoration ( if you have a tree etc)

I have a few special ornaments that I love to pieces!!!

Have you ever tried to Bake something special?

Of course! I love to cook during the holidays! For Christmas this year i'm making peppermint almond bark, scratch butter cookies with homemade butter icing, rice krispy treats, pumpkin fluff dip, corn casserole,peanutbutter/peanutbutter swirl cookies.....

Do you make a special meal for Christmas Eve?

Yes! This year, we're having Christmas Eve at my sister kimmy's house- we're doing a buffet with finger foods and a wide assortment of goodies. Then on Christmas day, we're celebrating at mine/my mom's duplex- we're making lasagna, corn casserole, dessert- etc

Do you open your gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

Christmas Eve is when my family opens most of their gifts. We usually save one of two for Christmas Day and do our stockings on Christmas Day

What's your favorite Tree? fake or real and what kind?

Fake! As a florist- I can't stress enoguh how i LOVE fake trees- they dont' get sap on you, they don't shed everywhere, they don't take water, they don't need to have their water changed, you name it! They're less of a fire hazard, they don't smell for those with allergies, and they can be reused. The only thing i like about live trees is the Christmasy scent.

What was your best winter holiday celebration?
When I was growing up, our family didn't have much money. We never went hungry or anything, but sometimes it was close. One Christmas, things were really tight so my parents decided we would all make things for each other instead of buying things. I know this sounds odd, but it was my favorite Christmas ever. Everybody was so creative and put so much thought into everything.

What was your worst?
Actually, it was probably last Christmas. We went to Arizona and spent it with Pat's parents instead of staying home so I could be with my family. His parents aren't much into celebrating, and his dad had just gotten out of the hospital. We didn't open any gifts until two days after Christmas and the only reason we all had dinner together is because I made something. I'm really glad we had the time with his parents, but it wasn't a very festive holiday.

Best holiday memory
My sister and I both had our very favorite dolls as we were growing up. As favorite dolls do, they tended to get a bit dirty and battered. Every Christmas my parents would make my sister and I leave our dolls under the Christmas tree so Santa could fix them up for us. I remember the magic of waking up on Christmas morning to find our dolls there waiting for us and being "just like new"!

Worst holiday memory
Having to wear the scratchy, ugly plaid pants (see worst gift)

What is the best gift you ever got during the season?
Tailer...DH rescued him and gave him to me as a birthday/Christmas gift (he paid for all the vet bills to make sure he was well when we took him in and to get him neutered)

What was the worst?
The prize still goes to the matching scratchy, ugly, turquoise and hot pink plaid slacks my grandmother bought for my sister and I when I was nine years old. My mom made us wear them, too.

Biggest Holiday Surprise
A diamond tennis bracelet from Pat two years ago (even though he was so excited he couldn't wait and gave it to me a week early)

Favorite holiday food
My mother's stuffing!

Name three famous people you would like to get holiday cards from?
Mikhail Baryshnikov
Dr. Seuss
Bette Midler

Who would you most want to be on the north pole with (santa doesn't count)
My sister...the two of us would have a ball at the north pole! (But it would probably never be the same!
)

Favorite holiday song
It seems to change every year...this year I'm into "O Holy Night"

Favorite decoration ( if you have a tree etc)
The homemade ornaments my niece has made for me every year since she was two.

Have you ever tried to Bake something special?
Yep. Every year. I make a TON of cookies to give out to Pat's customers and my colleagues at work. (My department has a "Cookie Day" where we all bring in stuff and put together boxes of cookies to give as a little thank you to the various support departments and such.) I'm also the official pie baker in my family since my grandmother passed. She was an AWESOME pie baker, and she taught me. I'm trying to keep up the family tradition by teaching my nieces.

Do you make a special meal for on Christmas Eve?
We celebrate with Pat's side of the family on Christmas Eve. These days, since everybody's moved, we're pretty much down to Pat and I and my stepson and maybe a few friends. But I still make a special dinner (with a pie) for it.

Do you open your gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?
Both. We open the gifts from Pat's side on Christmas Eve and from my side on Christmas morning.

What's your favorite Tree? fake or real and what kind?
I really love real trees, but I have a fake one.

Does your family have any special Christmas traditions that others might consider unusual?
Most of what my family does others might consider unusual.
One thing is that, without fail, we always watch "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" together for the first time on Thanksgiving Day. It's like the opening of the Christmas season for us. Another is that we tease my youngest brother by playing "keep away" at the dinner table. Whatever he asks to have passed to him gets passed slowly the LONG way around the table, then the last person before him reverses it and sends it back in the other direction. This started as the older kids picking on the youngest, but now even my parents get involved.
