Hi everyone,

I just read some search results about pooping outside the litter box. I'm thinking I will call the vet tomorrow morning but wanted to get a couple other people's insights to the issue.

We've had Luxor since October. He's pooped outside the litter box twice; once next to the upstairs one and twice next to the downstairs one. I know for certain that the upstairs episode was because it was dirty. For a while there they weren't using that one as much, then they decided they liked that one. . .etc. etc.

Well the other two times it's been next to the downstairs one. The downstairs one is covered - but because it is a piece of furniture removing the top isn't an option. I'm pretty sure both times I've found the poop have been after we put Stoli and Luxor in there while we were eating something that they wouldn't leave us alone over - like bread.

Could Luxor be pooping because he's mad?

OOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRR

Do you think he just 'had to go' and maybe Stoli was in there pooping and he couldn't hold it. It seems that Luxor uses the downstairs box for pees and poops while stoli uses it sporatically.

hmmmmm

You might try adding a 3rd litter box. The rule of thumb is one more litter box than the total number of cats you have.

Taking him to the vet, as you said, is the first thing.

I will tell you what I experienced with this. Kiko was pooing just right outside the box. Not always, sometimes. I was told to add more litter boxes, uncovered. I did that several months ago. I have never had an outside poo problem, not even once, since adding more. I have 5 cats and I have 7 litter boxes total. (which is the amount that was advised). I doubted it would resolve the issue, but to my surprise, it completely eliminated the problem from the very first day of the adding the additional boxes.

thanks - i'll add one tomorrow on my way to the vet.

where should i add one? i have a three story place but the first floor is out as it's just one big room. until i have an issue down there i don't think i need one. i have room in a hallway (not too heavily travelled); my bedroom; another in the third floor.

I have a 3 story place too. There is one floor they do not go very often, if at all. I scattered mine through out the 2 floors, they are always on. 4 on top floor, 3 on the middle. I just stuck them in any available corner, out of the way.

You know you can buy those "covers" to go around the boxes to make them look better. Let me do a search and I will come back and show you what Im talking about ......

Its called a "privacy screen" .... You can find all kind of varieties and it lets the cats have a box uncovered, but not an ugly litter box sitting out for everyone to see.....

actually, i'm a glutton for punishment; with my family arriving and just short of chaos erupting I haven't got another box yet - BUT

Luxor had a vet visit on Friday and friday morning he had a little piece of blue 'tinsel' sticking out of his rear. I knew it was from a toy so I knew how long it was - I was a bit worried. the vet took care of it and reassured me that kittens sometimes eat stuff that we don't even see and MOST of the time they'll pass it but it's always good to clean up after a play session.

luxor had diarrhea in his carrier on the way home and the vet calmed me down and gave me some instructions. .. .

i got luxor home, cleaned him up and he's been fine ever since. . .fingers crossed
