A rescue organization gone wrong

As a disclaimer, I realize that most rescue organizations are great. And despite flaws, most workers do their best.

however, I had an experience with a rescue organization that left a bad taste in my mouth. Long story short, I wanted a new kitty and I contacted the woman in charge off of petfinder.com. She seemed nice and I visited her house where there were about 30 cats running around together. I asked her how many were hers and she said 3 and the rest were there only on weekends adn weekdays she just had her three. She told me that 16 cats were being adopted that night.

I adopted a cat who was supposed to be healthy. However, the cat had herpes infection in the eye and a pretty bad URI. I told her about this and she said it was the "dry air" and to not worry about it. Pfft, yeah right!! The cat was the wrong sex and not fixed as she told me she was. So, I brought the cat back as the woman offered to bring her in for a vet exam for the "dry eyes" She told me she would hold my check and not cash it.

It was cashed the next day.

I came to get my money back and the cat that I had adopted was even more sick. All the cats were still there (it was a Tuesday) and there were MORE cats not less, as indicated by her telling me 16 were being adopted.

Almost all the cats had URIs, some had herpes eye infections, and the place was dirty. She lied and lied and lied. Animals that were "adopted" on petfinder were still there.

have you ever seen a rescue organization gone wrong?

She should be shot after she pays for all of those poor cats to be taken to the vet...

Thats a really crappy sounding person in my opinion

There was an individual that claimed to do rescue and a “no kill†shelter locally we used to get a lot of complaints about keeping animals in horrible conditions. I generally like to give organizations the benefit of the doubt, but when your animals are getting stolen because you keep them tied out or hit by cars…you are doing something wrong.
I feel awful for the animals in these situations and just as bad for the people scared off from adopting because of the negative impression they are left with.

Even though Petfinder.org is just a directory or “yellow pages†of rescues and shelters, I would still probably try to contact them and express their concerns about the situation. I would also contact your local shelter to see if they have received any complaints about the “rescue†or have any insight on the situation and go from there.

Chances are good she is going to have both males and females that aren't fixed and of course they are going to breed. That could very quickly turn into one of those horrible hoarding situations that I have occasionally heard about. Cats out of those situations usually aren't adoptable because of health problems and being feral.

Not all rescues are organizations. Some are, with a board of directors and abuilding and a monthly newsletter. Some are one-man-bands with a bunch of crates in the garage.

I am sorry to hear about your experience. I got one of our dogs from a one-woman rescue and the experience was fantastic. YOu may want to contact petfinder as they do not want crummy rescues listed but they cannot police them all.

Sounds like a person starting out meaning well and turning into a hoarder. And saying that cats had been adopted that she still has?
I would call the humane society or something and have them check her out. Poor kitties.

Please report her. The kitties need to be fixed and treated for their health problems.

That's terrible.
Please call the ASPCA or the Humane Society!
