They did not bother to biopsy Tippy's kidneys today, no need. He has very, very severe polycystic kidney disease, and atop that, pancreatitis.

Basicly we will address some of the kidney function changes by putting him on calcitriol, put him on pain med and pepcid ac for the pancreatitis, and our vet will consult with an internal specialist re using (I think this was it) benzapril.

But the bottom line, his prognosis is very poor, and no one can tell me how long. Apparently the cysts take up most of the kidney's.

I have no words, God give me strength.

Pat I'm so sorry to hear about Tippy. I understand what you're going through. Especially with the PKD since that is how I lost little Hallie 1 1/2 years ago (I can't believe it's been that long). I know you have a ton of experience with kidney failure but I don't remember if you've had a kitty with PKD or not. Anyway, I don't want to inject my beliefs or feelings here, and I respect your ability to make excellent decisions. You're awesome! I just thought I'd share my experience with the ugly disease, PKD. If I had it to do all over again, I would probably have helped Hallie over the rainbow bridge much sooner. Especially once it got to the point so much of her kidney's were so calcified and covered with the cysts. She was just in so much pain and discomfort. And right after she passed by herself, I felt so selfish for not being able to let her go sooner. I still have a hard time accepting she is gone. As you can see, I haven't even taken her out of my siggy.

Anyway, I'm so sorry you and Tippy are going through this. PKD is a horrible, devastating disease. I hope I never have to go through that again with a kitty.

I am so very sorry to hear this, I really hoped that things would be better for him and for you - I can't believe how many cats you have had with kidney issues recently. I do hope that things can be managed and you get to have more quality time together.

Thank you very much for sharing this. I will be having a detailed discussion with my vet when she gets back on Friday as to how to tell when it will be time..knowing that it may be different than say when Joshua had cancer (lung) so I knew to watch for respiratory distress. I only took Tippy in for some mild weight loss (under a lb.) and being "quiet"...sl. decreased appetite. That was it...occasional barf...he's a happy kitty who had only changed in that he was asking me for more attention lately. I just knew something was wrong, but this? Never dreamed. He is a shorthair domestic w/no look of persian ancestry - long, lean big, big boy.

I will do my best to know when it's time, but to give him all the good time he has left.

It is strange. I can understand the crf affecting my two oldest curls beginnign when they were 15ish, Frankie is just a puzzle as our formerly starving to death rescue and tippy? pkd is inherited, it is mainly seen in persians..he's a shorthair domestic rescue with no look of persian ancestry in him! But...the more I read, it is awful to see he is the age when it tends to "show" itself
He has had 6 good years since the year it took me to tame him and get him inside, and I know he would have passed on by now (many tom cat fights, and I knew from a previous cat I worked on taming, that we had an fiv positive kitty in the area, as that is what blue became infected with)...but I did expect him to be with us into his late teens
