I've always been an "outside looking in" type when it comes to religion. I was raised totally without it. I wasn't taught not to believe, it simply just didn't come up in our house.

But faith and religion is so dominant in the world that years ago I began studying different religions, reading the bible (well, most of it) and ended up completely baffled as to how anyone could believe any of it. I became rabidly anti-religious after Beirut, but I think that I may be pretty much over that now, it was over 23 years ago after all.

So, no arguments from me, just stating where I stand with it.

Ummm..sooooo why is everyone still arguing religion? I thought this was a topic about door-to door harassers, not about which religion is right or wrong?? Form your own IMO topic for that! (not that I didn't get a little caught up either )

I believe that being a good person, doing the best you can do and living your life to the full without hurting anyone (treading on a few toes doesn't count ) then at some point, everything will work out ok. If life has been tough then maybe you'll be reincarnated into a luckier life, maybe you'll go to heaven or maybe you'll become one with everything in the world like in the Phillip Pullman books. Either way, I believe that no kind or good god would send someone to hell or variation of just for not believing in them.
I always liked the idea of buddhism but I think they believe disabled people are disabled because of something they did in a past life and if so then I could never agree with a religion that thought that.

As for the topic ...
I find that most god botherers just give me a quick talk, hand me a notice or 7 then leave when I listen politely but show no interest in what they say.
I find door to door salesmen MUCH more irritating
I had one last week and i had to put the kittens away, then stand in the cold for 5 minutes before i could get a word in to explain I wasn't the bill payer and that she comes home 9. They then CAME BACK at 9!! over 2 hours later!! I had to hide and pretend I wasn't in.

My thoughts too. Though I have one interesting observation. The ones with the "loudest" voices on this thread are definately christians.

I REALLY don't think there's anything wrong with keeping your religion to yourself, being such a touchy subject and all. It's just common sense. If you want to be open, do it at your place of worship with like-minded individuals, you'll butt a few less heads that way and the world would be a much more peaceful place. For example, It's like carrying a stereo blaring rap in the subway. Some people like that, but a lot of people don't, and some even find it offensive. It's just asking for trouble.

Darn it, you are right, I looked it up. I have never been able to get through all of Revelation, since it is so open to interpretation. I am not sure what to think about Revelations and never have been.

P.s. I don't think anyone's arguing...rather, we're having an adult conversation stating personal feelings that are true for ourselves, but not meant to offend anyone else.

I like this thread because it helps me learn and see different viewpoints and potentially learn a little about a different religion. Now if only the people who start wars could look at these conversations positively.....

got a great link for you, then: Bible Gateway. it's basically a giant concordance - you can get the reference in a multitude of versions, look up by book, verse or keyword. i love it!

i really like how you can look at the same quote in all the different translations/versions. i also like how, since a lot of the time i know something's in the Bible, but not exactly where it is, i can use keywords & find what i'm looking for. it is a great site

Growing up, we had a woman come to our house once a week with pamphlets. We were usually cordial to her (she was elderly and me and my brothers were raised to have respect for our elders) but it got to be so grating and time consuming we would "duck and cover" when we would see her. Even if the house were completely open, we would hide and not answer the door. My parents were the same way. She stopped coming back after our dog at the time (he was just a puppy) peed on her shoe. *shrug*

And a little bit of humor...I was visiting an aunt in Kentucky with my mom when we sayw a Witness' church. Before I could stop myself, I said, "Hey, let's stop and knock on the door!"
