my 1 1/2 year old cat as ache on his chin. He continousley is scartching his chin on walld corners or anything he finds helpful to scratch on. It is constantly inflammed and irritating him. Is there anything i can try before taking him to the vet?

I have heard that you shave the chin down and then apply rubbing alcohol? or peroxide? not sure exactly what is was, or even if this works!

Anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thanks Nic

I believe this is usually caused by the use of plastic feeding bowls. Are you using plastic bowls? I'd recommend putting some Triple Antibiotic on the chin and switching to stainless steel bowls.

You need to switch out any plastic bowls and plastic place mats to glass and cloth. For his chin just dab it once a day with some hydrogen peroxide with a cottonball, not dripping, until it no longer looks inflamed, no shaving, or alcohol, and be gentle. It will go away slowly after you've gotten rid of the plastic. I give you this advice as someone who has had this experience. If it doesn't look better in a few days you may want to go to the vet. If your cat has something different, my advice may not apply.

This is excellent advice and will probably fix the problem if it is acne. I personally would dilute the hydrogen peroxide somewhat as it burns exposed flesh (whether human or kitty).

I just wanted to add that you should also not re-use dishes without washing them first. I have about 8 stainless steel kitty dishes and they are put in the dishwasher for cleaning. I always make sure that any time I give them food it is in a clean dish, i.e., never just put more food in a dirty dish.

In addition to plastic bowls causing the problem, I've also heard that ceramic can also do it if there is the tinyest crack or scratch. I would switch to a glass bowl. If you want to relieve it in the mean time, dab some hydrogen peroxide under his chin with some cotton until it goes away.
