Well, I am home from the vet - without Pearl. She will be staying overnight for observation. The vet will be doing an ultrasound to see if there is still anything in there but she pulled a pretty big chunk of my sweater out of Pearl's throat while we were there.

Someone asked about Siamese and Pica ... Siamese do seem to be more prone to it but I don't know why really. In Pearl's case, it seems to be a comfort thing. She starts off trying to "nurse" whatever and then ends up chewing on it ... you can figure out the rest. We've had to be really careful leaving stuff out laying around where she can get it and I have to admit, I was negligent last night when I got home from running errands. I took off my sweater and hung it from the back of a kitchen chair and then left it without another thought. *sigh* I know better.

Get well vibes for Baby Pearl. (and hugs for George
)

Seriously, I hope she's fine. My little female Susie from years ago had this same love for wool, ate the elbow out of a very expensive brand new sweater my overnight guest left hanging on a chair. Thank goodness it was a really good friend that didn't get upset - just told me my cat had good taste in clothing.

Oh Gaye - I'm so sorry to hear about Pearl! I'm sending HUGE "safely pass the rest of the sweater you ate" vibes her way.

Thankfully none of our kitties are wool eaters. But we did leave a wand toy out when we were "new" kitty parents. Spooky ate a good chunk of the string. Thankfully she was fine - but I spent 2 days searching the poop of 3 cats before we knew for sure!

Gaye,

I surely hope Pearl will be fine and back home with you asap.
Some of the things our cats do are very bizarre. We have to watch Jack like a hawk, because he has a plastic fetish. I even call him "plastic boy", because he is insane for those plastic bags from the grocery store. Hefty bags, Glad bags, you name it, he's on that stuff like ugly on an ape.
We're scared to death he's going to ingest it in his spastic efforts to destroy those bags.
I'm sure Pearl is in good hands this evening and you'll have her back safe and sound shortly. Good vibes coming your way for you and her.

My vet just called ... she is going to take Pearl home with her tonight just to make certain everything is OK. The Ultrasound didn't reveal anything out of the ordinary, but she wants to observe Pearl to make sure she poops overnight. She is eating and she is drinking voluntarily so both of those things are good signs. If all goes well, I can pick her up in the morning.

Thank goodness this wasn't more serious!

How comforting it must be that she's home with your vet now. You KNOW shes in good hands. Glad to know there was nothing with the ultrasound.
I will continue to keep Pearl in my prayers.

Oh I hope she's back home with you on the road to recovery soon!

As far as Pica goes, I have heard that it can be because some cats have more of a need than others to satisfy their hunting instinct just prior to eating, and will end up eating non-food objects that they have been playing with because the 'hunt then eat' instinct is strong - and along those lines I have heard it suggested that allowing them to 'hunt' a fishing-rod style toy right before feeding them will help them to eat their food, rather than other objects, as they have satisfied (in their eyes) the need to bring down prey - rather than have it offered to them in a bowl.. or put dry food in a toy that they need to roll around in order to get the food to fall out of it - I've never dealt with the problem myself, but read an article on it at some point and that's what it suggested.

My boy Dexter is a paper/plastic muncher.
I can't leave anything out...grocery bags, books etc.

It is really special that your vet is taking Pearl home tonight for observation.
Both you and sweet Baby Pearl will be in my thoughts.
