Hi! I'm new here. I joined a while back, but forgot to activate my registration when my comp was down.

I needed some help/advice in regards to PetSmart and their adoption services. We have four cats @ the moment and during a trip to PetSmart last Thursday to Xmas shop for our animals I looked over @ the cats that were up for adoption. I've seen one or two cats before I had interest in, but since we have four cats now my Mom and I knew the cats would be given to good homes.

Well, Thursday I noticed a beautiful 3 month old orange male kitten. Sadly he was found in my town Grand Terrace, which made it especially hard to deal with. I always keep a look out for any kittens to help out and I'm often found outside feeding our local stray cats. For the longest time since getting my first cat 13 years ago I've wanted an orange cat. When I saw him, our eyes met and I knew he was for me. The thing is I've never adopted with PetSmart before. My Mom told me it was a tedious process and we were quite nervous over this.

We wrote down a number and when we got home my Mom called. A lady answered from the agency. My Mom said she wasn't too nice about adopting the kitten, which made me more nervous and that we'd have to have our papers on all of the cats. Shot records, etc and we do. My Mom handles all of that. She has a huge booklet with their records from not only the vet, but from her cat Tommy that had to goto the emergency vet up the street. We got him @ a really bad pound last summer. He got sick from lack of care and now has weak lungs, so my Mom watches him and gives him a lot of vitamins.

Anyway (I ramble a lot. I apologize for that!), the lady said if we had all the documents that we'd probably be accepted, but then she said that we'd need to fill out applications and that it could take 3 months until he gets neutered by their vet.

I really want him home here for us during the holidays, so I'm not sure what to do. We're going in Monday to see the agent @ the store to show her all our papers and I'm going to take some photos of our cats, their toys and their little Xmas corner we have for them.

Ever since I was a kid I have adored cats more than dogs, though I take in either and I'm against any sort of animal cruelty. I know PetSmart is good in a sense that they want their animals to go to good homes. I've had friends tell me how much they adored cats, having a couple themselves, but then when a stray comes along they brush it off and to me that doesn't make me believe their 'cat' lovers.

I want to prove to her that we are loving pet owners and treat our animals greatly, but I'm afraid she'll still deny us of the cat until their vet treats him. My Mom said we probably couldn't get him then becuz we have our own vet. We're going to bring it up to her as well. We'd rather have our vet neuter him instead. We have two males already and both are neutered.

Is there any advice or help from exerience anyone has had on here in regards to PetSmart and their adoption service? Especially if it involves a kitten. I read on PetSmart some stores let you take the kitten to your vets, others don't. I'm sure all the stores are different in every way, but any information or advice to a newbie in this style of adoption would greatly help me out.

My biggest concern is that he will not have a home for the holidays. To me I want him to have his first christmas, even if not with me, but to have a home for the holidays. I think waiting would be a shame as well, becuz as tiny as he is, being in a home would help him overcome what has happened and to get used to seeing his new owner(s).

Our two kittens we got 5 months ago we got from an ad online. A couple lived in highland and they claimed that both kittens were female 6-8 weeks old. They turned out to be only 3-4 weeks old and one was a male. I was so furious, but after seeing how bad they were (Lapping up cat milk like crazy, sucking on pillows, blankets, etc. PetSmart was out of cat bottles @ the time too) we knew they were meant for us. They used to cry and run to us whenever they woke up. We think it was becuz they were taken too young from their Mom, but now being here with us they don't do that anymore and when they do cry when they wake up it's becuz they wanna see us, which makes us happy to know we were able to give them a chance to grow up and get strong.

Thanks for reading my rambles, haha.
I really hope I get this little guy. I can't get him out of my head. I keep seeing his face. I really wanna see him again.

Kristina.

Welcome Krissette..it's great you want to help this little one...but I need to correct a statement that you have made. Petsmart is only responsible for supplying the space...the kittens/cats that are shown are through a rescue group/humane society or animal shelter/animal control group and each one has their own policies regarding what needs to be completed and how long the process will take. What you need to do is look for the name of the adoption group that has their kittens/cats at this particuliar petsmart and then see whether they have an online website (most groups do). Usually the group's adoption procedures are right on their website so my advice would be to read up. It may be that they do not adopt out (only show) their kittens until they can be spayed/neutered...but that is something you will need to ask the group.

Right now is a very busy time for rescuers and I'm sure that group is getting a lot of inquires about their kittens. Because rescuers are usually doing this as a volunteer service (they still have regular jobs etc. to attend to) your mom may have reached this lady at a bad time. You may also want to inquire if there is any way that you could potentially help this group. Most rescue groups are in desperate need of volunteers to help.

Good Luck.

That wouldn't happen to be the little orange guy at Petsmart in SB would it? If it is I don't think they won't hold him for three months. I am affilated with one of the rescues these ladies used to work with and what we do is if the kitten is too young to get fixed you get a voucher for our vet and you pay a small deposit. When they are fixed you get your deposit back. I don't think these ladies changed their rules too much. I met him on Saturday when I was in there and he was one sweet boy! If that was him good luck!

By the way I am just a foster.

Hi,

Who is the actual adoption agency? Is it Cat Angel Network? My local PetSmart works with them--and I volunteer for them.

I know it's frustrating for you, but it sounds like they want be do the right thing with the cats in their care. I attended volunteer training for Cat Angel, and they have stringent rules because they really love their cats, and there are a lot of weirdos out there (I am not implying you are one!!). They use the adoption process to screen for potential problems. They also provide the 1st vet's exam, shots, neutering/spaying (you pay for these in the adoption fee--which is a bargain). This is why it takes so long to adopt. They also want to be sure that a potential adopter is truly serious about adopting. If someone is willing to pay the fee and wait, they assume they are geniunely interested in the cat. Also, they want to make sure any other of your pets are up to date with shots, etc. PLEASE don't neglect to get your other pets' shots--this is now coming back to haunt me. I didn't get feline leukemia shots for my pets, and brought in fosters--and 1 is felv positive (but has been quarantined, so hopefully there has been no exposure for my other cats). This is why they check up on you--and also to make sure you are a responsible pet owner.

If it makes you feel any better, I decided to adopt one of my fosters for them--and even I had to submit an application 2 months ago, (and I've been feeding and littering this cat since August, driving to vet's appointments, etc.), and just found out I was approved!

I undertand it when you say you want to have the cat home for it's 1st Christmas; but really, the kitty doesn't know what the holiday is. I'd feel the same as you in your situation--I'm awaiting a Christmas miracle for my felv baby. You'll have plenty more Christmases with your baby once he's adopted into your family.

I know it's maddening for you--especially if you're a responsible pet owner--but I hope the above helps you see it from their point of view. They have the best interests of the cat in mind.

Best of luck,

MargeCat

Dude, that is tough. I dunno which Petsmart you are talking about but my gf and I adopted our cat from the Corona Petsmart. It was a painless process that only took an hour. Unfortunately, Petsmart doesn't run the adoption services, they only provide the space in their stores. So...experiences vary from store to store. Good luck with your kitty, I hope you get him in time.

I don't think PetSmart has any standardized process. I'm pretty sure the company lets different local rescues come in and PetSmart gives them space to take care of them, and that's all. The rescue organization is in charge of deciding the criteria they will consider when finding new homes.

Good luck... if you have all the papers, I'm sure you'll do fine! Keep us posted.
