Can cats get constipated?

I have a 13 year old cat. She was diagnosed with kidney disease about
2 1/2 years ago. She is doing really well though. She has no problem eating the special food from the vets for cats with kidney disease.

But she hasn't pooped in a week and I am getting concerned. She acts fine and is eating okay.

Any ideas of anything I could give her to get her to poop.

I also give her a liquid Papaya/Cranberry Dietary Supplement every day.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Cindy

I had a cat that was constipated once. The vet told me to give her 1/8 teaspoon of plain Metamucil in a small amount of wet food. Unfortunately there aren't any small bottles of that stuff, so I had to buy a full sized bottle just to give her 1/8 teaspoon. But it worked great!

EDIT: Actually I just remembered that the cat was Toby who also had renal failure.

I mix a tablespoon or 2 of pumpkin (the kind in the can that you use for pies) in with Dori's food when she is having trouble.

Cindy, you may want to check with your vet if she hasn't gone by Monday though. A week seems like a long time....

IT is common for cats with CRF to have constipation, and can happen when they are dehydrated, so adding more water to her diet might be a big help. I would certainly ring the vets though, I have a cat who suffers with constipation, I use Lactulose on her, as per the vet.

If she hasn't had a bowel movement since Monday and she's eating normally, I'd say a vet check is in order first. While there, talk to your vet about Lactulose and pumpkin. I give both to my girl everyday to help her with hard stools. If you start feeding her pumpkin, make sure you get the plain canned variety NOT the pumpkin pie filling.

I was also going to mention not to get the pie filling. Get the plain canned pumpkin.

If she won't eat pumpkin or metamucil, you can also try All-Bran cereal or bran muffins or the new Metamucil Fiber Sure in the blue can.
