Before we put in stand we recut the truck so the tree will take up water better. And the first few days you will need to check the stand and add water 2-3 times a day.

No sugar necessary, just water.

Real trees are a huge fire hazard, so make sure that the tree stand always has water in it. You don't want it to dry out.

Before cats, I ALWAYS put Tylenol in the water to keep it from drying out and dying. But, with the cats, I would NEVER even think about doing that as it is toxic to them. So, we use only fake trees now.

I heard on the radio the other day that it doesn't matter what you put in the water for a tree (sugar, tylenol, bleach) that just plain water is the best. The tree doesn't last any longer or dry out faster with or without this stuff in it.

Also you can buy a little snowman that you can put at the base of the tree that lights up when the water is low
