I am back from the clinic. Maisie is in a four star box and there are two vets looking after her. I saw the foal on the screen - it was moving OK.
But the overall news is not good and I may have to prepare myself for losing the foal, or even both of them. She has gone into hepatic lipidosis and her values are off the chart in so many places. Her white cells are abnormal too. They will try to stabilise her and feed her subQ with glucose, then see if they can get her system moving. There is an absence of abdominal liquid which is worrying. Tonight when she is seen by the head guy, they will decide whether it would improve her chances if they remove the foal. They will only do it if they feel it will make a real difference by removing the pressures on her system. I feel numb, though I knew she was very sick. I have of course cancelled my UK trip, and the family understand. Tartine is fine - she hasn't realised yet her mother is not there, I gave her a pile of hay in the top of hte field to occupy her, and she is talking with the horses over the fence. I will give her some time this afternoon. Help me, I need vibes and support. I am not sure why all this is happening - I am not religious or anything, but I feel I just have too much to cope with right now.

I've been out and spent some time with Tartine - she realises her mother is missing now and is whinnying for her and sniffing round some droppings (that I then removed - I am not sure if that was the right thing to do or not). It is so like Wellington was that I began to cry. But she enjoyed a bowl of carrot and apple.

Oh gosh, Jenny. I'm so sorry to hear this. I'm so glad that you followed your instinct and found a specialist for Maisie. And I'm also glad that she now has an owner like you to care for her in this way.

Sending lots of vibes for you, Maisie, the foal, and little Tartine. None of you deserve this kind of pain and hardship.

I just phoned the hospital and Maisie is stable this morning. They sedated her overnight so she could rest, and she has eaten a little. She has been on a glucose drip too to get something into her. My poor little girl, but she is in the best possible place. In a funny way, I feel relief - at least the worry of not knowing what to do has gone. Tartine is eating hay in the field, and I gave her an apple and talked to her a while. It is a beautiful winter morning, but with frost on the ground and I am glad Maisie is indoors in her luxurious stall.

I am glad that Maisie is in the best hands possible. Not only can she rest but so can you. I am so sorry for your continuing heartache but as has already been said you are not alone, you have a whole world behind you

sending my love to you all at this time
