On Sunday I'm going home to Australia, I have a 6 hour wait in Vancouver so no doubt I'll be doing some shopping.

I don't understand what duty free really means
do I have to declare everything that I buy?

thanks

I hope your family likes maple treats and smoked salmon.
I'd highly recommend the Roger's chocolates called "Victoria Creams." They are huge and delicious, and about $3 CDN each. I hope I get some in my stocking this year!

Duty Free means no tax and no duty charges from things bought at the Duty Free Shop in the airport.

We just got back from Australia!!

You can buy electronics and that sort of stuff up to 30 days before you fly and claim back the tax on it. Eg. laptop, iPod, camera etc. You can also buy things from the duty free shops at the airport such as alcohol, perfume and that kinda stuff and it's much cheaper than retail because you're not paying the duty on it.

There's a limit on how much you can take though, so if you want anything, make sure it's allowed. We brought back a bottle of Bundy Rum and some Mint Chocolate Baileys

If any of you ever have the chance, shop in Luxembourg. It is one of the tiniest countries in the world but one of the most visited because everything is so SO cheap without any taxes of any kind. I bought a box of $500US Cuban cigars there for $65 to give you an example. Like in any duty free shop, tobacco and liquor are the BIG savings items because they are the most highly taxed items.
