Has anyone ever heard this song? It's the saddest Christmas song that I've ever heard. One of the fellows at work brought the CD in today for me to listen to, and I actually started crying and couldn't stop. It's performed by Meryn Cadell, and it's incredibly sad and beautiful!

The Cat Carol

The cat wanted in to the warm warm house,
but no one would let the cat in
It was cold outside on Christmas Eve,
She meowed and meowed by the door.

The cat was not let in the warm warm house,
And her tiny cries were ignored.
'twas a blizzard now, the worst of the year,
There was no place for her to hide.

Just then a poor little mouse crept by,
He had lost his way in the snow.
He was on his last legs and was almost froze,
The cat lifted him with her paw.

She said "Poor mouse do not be afraid,
because this is Christmas Eve.
"On this freezing night we both need a friend,
"I wonâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t hurt you - stay by my side."

She dug a small hole in an icy drift,
This is where they would spent the night.
She curled herself 'round her helpless friend,
Protecting him from the cold.

Oooooo

When Santa came by near the end of the night,
the reindeer started to cry.
They found the cat lying there in the snow,
and they could see that she had died.

They lifted her up from the frozen ground,
and placed her into the sleigh.
It was then they saw the little mouse wrapped up,
she had kept him warm in her fur.

"Oh thank you Santa for finding us!
"Dear cat wake up we are saved!"
..."Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m sorry mouse but your friend has died,
thereâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s nothing more we can do.

"On Christmas Eve she gave you her life,
the greatest gift of them all."
Santa lifted her up into the night sky,
and laid her to rest among the stars.

"Dear mouse donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t cry you are not alone,
you will see your friend every year.
"Each Christmas a Cat Constellation will shine,
to remind us that her loveâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s still here."

Oooooooo

That does brings tears to my eyes too...It is beautiful, but so sad that it is too true that so much suffering could be easily elimated by a few generous gestures. It reminded me of the words in a Jim Croce song that talked about how people say they love the baby then they crucify the man.
When I see all the sprawl on the California hillsides, those huge, huge homes, I wonder why there are so many dogs and cats languishing in their animal shelters - there' s more than enough floor space to provide living quarters for so many

Quite - it's really not appropriate for me to burst into tears in the office for no apparent reason!
Very sad

Reminded me of the Christmas special: Nestor the Long-Eared Donkey - his mom curled up around him and died keeping him warm, and he later became the donkey that Mary rode on to Bethleham - made me bawl like an infant.

Yes! I love Meryn Cadell (you should hear some of her funnier old stuff)
I heard this song a couple of years ago, and bawled and bawled. Happens everytime I hear it..so I kinda try NOT to hear it now..hah

I always thought there should be another stanza about how Santa didn't leave the people any presents..or kicked the people's &sses for not letting the little kitty in ..

Watching the robins sing!
That song reminds me of the short story The Happy Prince, written by Oscar Wilde. It really isn't a Christmas story, per se, but I always put the book out during the holidays. You can easily find the story on line - but I will warn you, it is sad, although beautiful story of love and caring for others. I think EVERYONE should read it. I would love to hear from anyone who has read it or does read it now.

I just listened to it again - same reaction as before! At least I wasn't at work this time! I listened to The Sweater too - hilarious! I didn't realize that she did that one. I've heard it before - Josée Choinard did a skating routine to it a few years ago that was hilarious!

Thank you MCMaggie - I needed that!
