Mimosa is our beloved 10-yr old cat. Sometimes she likes to defecate outside the litter box. I just can't figure out why she does this? She has two litter boxes and they are kept clean all the time. I clean the boxes the every morning. She has 2 boxes is because I figure if she does her business in one box she has another clean box if she goes again because I work in the day and can't clean her box till I get home from work. Once in a while, she will go to our rug and defecate on the it. She doesn't do this all the time but once in a while. Sometimes it is once in 2 weeks or once a month. She doesn't spray or urinate outside the litter box at all. She only defecate. Do you think I should take her to a vet? Is this a behavorial or a medical problem? Please help.

Thanks

Is she eating OK? Drinking OK? She's not straining to urinate? Does she have runny eyes? A runny nose?

she is eating and drinking fine. she doesn't have a runny nose or watery eyes. I took her to see a vet earlier in summer but the vet didn't think there was anything wrong with her health.

Thanks.

Yes ,... senior panels check organ function .. it can catch "oldie" issues at a pt u can improve the qulaity and quanitiy of the cats life... If nothing is "off" know then you have a baseline for later on

It would be a good idea to ring up your vet and just explain the circumstances to him/her. Cats usually do NOT go outside the litterbox unless there is a reason.

I honestly don't know if a UTI would cause your cat to defecate outside the box. Perhaps your vet may not know either, so that's where the panel blood work could come in.

I am not sure I have ever heard of this but could it be that for some reason, your baby doesn't mind urinating in the box, but simply has a aversion, allergy, doesn't like the smell.....for her to defecate in the box????

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I don't intend to minimize the importance of vet checkups and blood panels. But this can be a behavioral issue. Kolohe has occasionally defecated outside the box if the box is not clean enough for him. I've caught him in the act first thing in the morning before I've had a chance to clean the boxes. He'll look in one box, decide he doesn't like the look or the smell and poop right in front of it without checking the other boxes. I clean all the boxes just before I go to bed but they sometimes get heavy use overnight.

My mom's cat used to perch with all four feet on the edge of the litterbox, as if she was repulsed by the thought of her dainty feet touching the litter. As often as not, she'd end up with her backend facing the wrong way, and poop outside the box.
Switching to a covered box helped solve that problem.

At minimum, I'd contact your vet about the problem and drop off a stool sample to be checked.
