Its been a long time since my last cat was a kitten, and I dont remember. What age do they start being cats and not kittens? When do they start calming down and not being as mischievious?
I'm still waiting for my 3yr siamese to calm down. She's not as destructive as she used to be but I think that cause she's broke everything that's breakable.
As Stefan says, it can vary from individual cat to individual cat. I have two 6 month-old kittens (male and female) and two 3 year-old adult cats (also male and female) at the moment.
The kittens are ... well, kittens. They act like kittens. They are into absolutely everything, somehow magically appearing anywhere I am trying to do something at all times. They are active and athletic, they run up and down my Ranch-O-Rama Bowling Alley-style hallway all night sounding like an entire herd of African Elephants! And of course, one might expect this type of behavior from kittens ... but what does surprise me is the 3 year-old female. She is right up in there with the babies ... running, playing, jumping around like a wild thing. She has NOT settled down at all! The 3 yearold male is calm and likes peace. Not my girl. She wants the adventure, the danger, the fun. *LOL*
Duke (my almost 7 month old siamese) is active and rambunctious. And heaven forbid I can't play with him when he's ready! (and of course thats usually around 5am
) I'm getting a buddy for him in two weeks, so hopefully he won't be so disappointed when I can't play (he already sounds like a herd of elephants on his own... On CARPET!!!)
My rexes were still playing like kittens at times over 10 yrs old. But I would say "some" adult behavior starts about 1-2 yrs old. A healthy cat should be playing like a kitten at times - not all the time but often
My 7 month old is a right little horror! I don't know how he has so much energy, he spent all morning, and I mean several hours, racing about the flat at top speed, playing in boxes, and leaping all over the place. I'm secretly hoping that he stays that way, he always makes me laugh
I think it's a siamese thing. They stay kitten-like long after they aren't kittens. My 2 yr old Russian blue mix will often look at Viola in the middle of her antics as if to say, "What are you doing- come take a nap like a normal cat".
Jaffa is starting to calm down now - he's 9 yrs old
He's always been a lively lad (he's a moggy but he has the build and temperament of a foreign style breed, and definitely stayed kittenish for a long time). His brother Magpie wasn't like that - once he was grown up (about 1) he lost that hyper, kittenish behaviour. Mosi is nearly 1 yr old and while he's not quite as kittenish as he was when I got him, he's still extremely lively and cheekyand races around the place like a nutter - not showing much sign of losing his kitten behaviour.
Sheba acted kitteny until she was about 16. Even in her last two years, she had sporatic lapses into kittenhood. We said she was the Dick Clark of cats.
But the first two years are the worst. Gracie didn't sleep thru the night (or rather, let US sleep thru the night) until she was about a year and a half old.
Harley was pretty wild when he was a kitten - but he's calmed down a lot, and he's 1.5 years old... Davidson is still a psycho
He's only about 5 months
Harley really calmed down after he was neutered - I hope its the same case with Davidson! Although Harley still has his occasional outburt , only when Davidson is acting the same way tho!
So, Captain Steuben is 8 months old, and not even remotely calming down. I swear, he hallucinates most of the day, jumping up sporadically and swatting at things that aren't there, doing odd "crab walks", playing jump rope with Fergus and Ripley's tails, doing the "Steuben 500" from 1 a.m. until 6 a.m., chasing his own tail (and attacking it when it's been "bad"), dipping his toes into the water dish and then freakishly dashing away...he is absolutely exhausting at times. The nice thing about Steuben, is that he has brought a bit more kitten out of 4 year-old Fergus, and 3 year-old Ripley. They tolerate him, will sometimes sleep in a huddle, but most of their awake time is spent looking at him like, "Dear Lord, make it stop."
I have a 2 year old cat and she is crazy. Never calms down and wants to play all the time. I have another cat and am unsure of her age as she was a stray but she sleeps all day. Both cats are strays but I know my 2 yr old cats age as I found her when she was a baby. She constantly asks for attention and does it by refusing food. I hope she'll grow out of it but I don't think it'll happen for a while. Only recently has she managed to sleep all night and I live in a one bedroom apartment with no door to the bedroom so it's been tough. I love her dearly but I hope she can calm down and take it easy. Don't get me wrong we have some great times chilling out on the sofa when she is the best cat in the world but as I write this message she is meowing at me to play and it's 10pm. I don't think there is a rule as to when they calm down so be prepared for sleepless nights and more. Understand that they are hunting animals and need stimulation all the time but always give them your attention when you can. They'll be your best friends for life.
