Chestnuts Roasting On....

....my gas hob!

I bought some Chestnuts from the market the other day and just decided that I wanted to roast them up to eat now! (I know, I'm supposed to be doing my cleaning, but I need energy food! )

I was wondering, how do you know when they're ready? Is there a set time that I should wait?

Oh I should have thought of this before I bought the things!

I used to put mine in a hot oven for about 30 mins, i think? It's been that long since i did some.

I might give that a go! The one I just ate was pretty solid! I'll let you know how they come out!

I know what you mean about it being so long! The last time I remember roasting them at home, my parents used the shovel and put that on the gas!

I'm sure no help, Sarah. I never time anything. It's important to cut a t or x in them so you're not singing chestnuts exploding in my hot oven Then, I wrap them in foil and put them in the preheated oven. Estimated 30 minutes sounds about right. Go by your nose, and I firmly believe in frequent taste testing!

I'm not good at timing things either - I'm pretty much a guesser!

I have cut the x's and wrapped them in foil! Now we just have to wait to see what happens! Hopefully no explosions!

After the first one I managed to eat, I'll definitely be tasting again, but hopefully once they're cooked!

I always boiled mine for 20 minutes, then roasted them until the shells popped open.

If you are roasting them in an oven, please, use a dutch oven with a lid as chestnuts popping open can be very deadly

that is SO FUNNY, and so not funny all at the same time! But a great warning, I never woulda thunk that!

I thought a Dutch Oven was the farty duvet trick!

They are firmly wrapped in foil, so they should be okay I think! Plus, I followed Stephanie's advice of cutting x's into each one!

that I don't blow the oven up!

I have just taken my chestnuts out of the oven and thanks to your tips, I only managed to burn one!

All I need for my second batch is a nice hot cup of Mulled Wine!

You end up squiffy and your house will ever get cleaned.

I know! So far, I've managed to do the dishes!

But roasted chestnuts and Mulled Wine are much, much, better than cleaning!

Maybe if I offer the agent some Mulled Wine, he won't notice the mess?

Yeah, it was in Aimes' (ugaimes) spotlight of the week thread!

It is absolutely delicious! I'm going to buy a couple of bottles of the German Glühwein that I have been drinking at the Continental Market - that really is the best stuff!

It really is so warming and soothing!
