Hi all!

I have two barn cats that showed up this past summer. One "Honey" I was able to tame in about a week and now she's a luvbug. The other "Bootsie" is still very much feral and looks to have had a rough time. It's tail is broken and probably full of fleas and worms..I do put worming medicine in their canned food.

I'm on the list for the TNR program in my county and noticed that it says they keep the social ones and would try to rehome them.

I don't want them to keep Honey...I'd like her back. Bootsie would be alone and I know they keep eachother warm on these cold winter days.

Is keeping and rehoming the social cats a common practice, or is it at the discretion of the caretaker?

Anyone who has experience with these programs, please share your experiences? Are there usually nice cats in with ferals living together?

I don't have any experience with any formal TNR groups in our area - there's a spay/neuter group, but the people working with ferals around here usu. go it alone, but the local vets are awesome at helping out. Anyway, I recommend calling the TNR and explaining the situation; IMO, they'd be glad to know that there is an existing home for the feral. I guess the only objection would be if they thought you were trying to "scam" them into neutering your cat for free
I pray that they are not that cynical

As for the other kitty, sounds like the pain of a broken tail and other health concerns will hinder her taming down. Sending {{{prayers and vibes}}} that the TNR helps out, and that the 2nd feral cat is tamed and treated, and gets to move on to becoming a tame cat that belongs to a real family

I would simply explain that you want both cats back to live with you.

Thanks catsknowme & TNR

I'm new to all this. I won't be bringing them inside--not anytime soon. If I get Bootsie tamed I will get her/him in to get the dead tail removed next year. The whole thing is lifeless, and if she did what my childhood cat did (my Bootsie growing up had a dead tail also) then she has chewed off the length so it doesn't drag..it does look like it hangs about 1 inch from the ground.

I have a pony going in to an eye specialist on Friday and may need it removed. That expense alone is going take everything I have...I couldn't get the cats spayed on my own not until next year and I fear a litter of kittens by then. I do welcome the mousing they are doing in my barn and I have provided them with a dry, warm shelter made out of hay and a fleece saddle pad and plenty of food and water. I sure hope they don't think I'm bilking the program because I truly only want to be responsible while providing them a place out of the cold.

Tia....just talk to the people that run the program and explain how much these cats mean to you. Also..they may be very receptive if you would be willing to take on additional "fixed" ferals to live at your barn.
