On my way home from work tonite I hit a deer! Wasn't even dark out. Just came out of nowhere and jumped right in front of my car. I hit him straight on doing about 45mph. Scared me sooooo bad. I've never hit anything like that. It hit the front of my car, then bounced up on to the hood. My dad said I was very lucky because it did hit the hood, but it didn't flip up into my windshield, instead it flipped off the drivers side. It could have been a lot worse, but I'm still shaking. Car has some real damage to it - crumpled hood (like an accordian), busted lights, broken bumper and grill, and my drivers door is having trouble opening meaning the left front portion of the car is damaged as well. I cried all the way home thinking of the poor deer. It struggled in the road for a while stopping traffic on both sides and I was figuring the police would put it out of it's misery when I turned my head and it was gone. I feel so bad. The poor thing is out there probably hurt.

I know this happens to a lot of folks, but it's so scary when it happens to you. I'll be driving that road much much slower from now on or I'll be taking another route home from work.

Been there as well. Thankfully the deer I hit was pretty much killed on impact.

Good luck with getting your car fixed, and sorry that you had to go through this.

Crap, that has to ruin your day. Our son hit one back in August (???? why a deer on the road in summer, I do not know) and it does not make for fun with the insurance.

I have hit several squirrels in my life, they are so fast and you just cannot see them coming and they change their mind in the middle of the road. I probably do not have to tell you that there are video games, sick ones at that, where you try and run animals down.

No Vacancy...One on the way!
You poor thing!
Those deer are very fast and FEARLESS!
Where I live those suckers got some real guts!

When I travel to my dads house I am like a HAWK! I watch the road, the highway sholder...the woods to the side of me, I just worry so much since its such a wooded area that he lives in.

When i was a kid there was a dear loose in my neighborhood running around on a very busy street. It was the a very dangerous situation. I assumed somone either shot the deer and didnt gut it and took it into the city or they hit it and just threw it into their vehicle without checking to see how "dead" it was lol.

thank heaven you ok!
sorry for your car. hopefully the insurance company will understand. some states need Deer insurance lol!

That's what I'm worried about......

How horrible was the whole insurance deal? Did they cover it? My dad says they will, but there's a lot of damage and I'm freaking out about the cost right before Christmas.
I was originally thinking that it was just the body of the car (hood, bumper, grill, left panel, etc), but my X-husband took a peek under the bent hood and he says the air filter he can see is popped off.
Not sure what else under there might be a mess too. (And the car is only a year old with 17K miles on it!!)

I do have to say though, that I am also very lucky because my annual inspection sticker on my car expired in November and I completely forgot to renew it. I did it this morning!! Phew! That's a moving violation where I live.

aww sweetie it is not your fault.
even the most cautious driver could not prevent a deer running out in front of their vehicle. they are very fast and often dart out before you even have a chance to break. my sister monica has hit 3. she lives in the country out in mississippi...and there are deer everywhere- she is a very careful driver, but even she would tell you, there's nothing you can do when they run out in front of you. try not to blame yourself...accidents do happen
i hope you are able to get your car repaired at a decient rate.

I'm so sorry to hear about that!! I've never hit a deer, but I've had a few close calls! At least you were able to drive your car home

I saw a deer just a few nights ago on my way home. I stopped as it was in the road & it actually ran at my car! I was amazed, but hit my horn & it took off the other direction. I seriously wondered if the deer was going to hit my car.

I hope your insurance isn't too much trouble. After all, how were you supposed to know a deer felt like playing in traffic?

I cannot begin to tell you how close I've been to hitting one. There is a very large herd of deer in Wisconsin About 1.6 million!! Deer hunting took that down about 400,000 but still way to high. Vehicle/deer accidents are fairly common here. When bucks go in rut I avoid certain roads due to seeing too many deer!! In Wisconsin its usually covered under your comprehensive coverage-they should cover all but your deductible. Neil hit one in October with the truck (that goodness I asked for the car that day!) Just a small dent on the side of the box of the truck. We haven't made a claim yet though.
Hoping they can repair your vehicle quickly!!

How scary! I've come very close a couple times but thankfully did not hit one. They can really do a lot of damage to a car and it sounds like it did to yours. Try not to worry too much about the insurance - that's what it's there for and probably you will only need to pay your deductible.

My drive home from work takes me along some back roads and wooded areas and I drive very carefully, especially around sundown as that seems to be when they come out to eat.

Hope you are calmed down somewhat by the time you read this. Take care. I know how upset it must be to wonder how the poor deer is doing and how badly hurt he/she is, but it's in God's hands now. There's nothing you can do and it wasn't your fault.

Thank goodness you're OK. And I know it's tough not knowing what happened to the deer, but you did what you could. The closest call I ever had w/a deer was at high noon on one of the busiest roads in town -- I missed by mere inches.

don't worry too much about the insurance - it's pretty evident from the damage that it was unavoidable. I had a friend in high school that totalled his car because he swerved to miss the deer, and his insurance refused to pay because he couldn't prove the deer was actually there!

How frightening that must have been. The important thing is that you are OK. Hopefully the insurance won't be a hassle. You had no options at the time.
