I hit a deer!

On my way home from work tonite I hit a deer! Wasn't even dark out. Just came out of nowhere and jumped right in front of my car. I hit him straight on doing about 45mph. Scared me sooooo bad. I've never hit anything like that. It hit the front of my car, then bounced up on to the hood. My dad said I was very lucky because it did hit the hood, but it didn't flip up into my windshield, instead it flipped off the drivers side. It could have been a lot worse, but I'm still shaking. Car has some real damage to it - crumpled hood (like an accordian), busted lights, broken bumper and grill, and my drivers door is having trouble opening meaning the left front portion of the car is damaged as well. I cried all the way home thinking of the poor deer. It struggled in the road for a while stopping traffic on both sides and I was figuring the police would put it out of it's misery when I turned my head and it was gone. I feel so bad. The poor thing is out there probably hurt.
I know this happens to a lot of folks, but it's so scary when it happens to you. I'll be driving that road much much slower from now on or I'll be taking another route home from work.

That same exact thing happened to me before. Im so sorry, I know how it feels. I cried for days. Heres sending calming vibes to you Im glad you are ok.

Been there as well. Thankfully the deer I hit was pretty much killed on impact.

Good luck with getting your car fixed, and sorry that you had to go through this.

Oh that's so sad, sorry that happened to you, the most I ever hit was a jack rabbit and I was just sick about it, It wasn't your fault can't ever tell when something will run into the highway...Calm down and relax and don't feel to bad I know it's hard.

Oh no, that must have been so scary...that is horrible. I hope you are okay

Crap, that has to ruin your day. Our son hit one back in August (???? why a deer on the road in summer, I do not know) and it does not make for fun with the insurance.

I have hit several squirrels in my life, they are so fast and you just cannot see them coming and they change their mind in the middle of the road. I probably do not have to tell you that there are video games, sick ones at that, where you try and run animals down.

You poor thing!
Those deer are very fast and FEARLESS!
Where I live those suckers got some real guts!

When I travel to my dads house I am like a HAWK! I watch the road, the highway sholder...the woods to the side of me, I just worry so much since its such a wooded area that he lives in.

When i was a kid there was a dear loose in my neighborhood running around on a very busy street. It was the a very dangerous situation. I assumed somone either shot the deer and didnt gut it and took it into the city or they hit it and just threw it into their vehicle without checking to see how "dead" it was lol.

thank heaven you ok!
sorry for your car. hopefully the insurance company will understand. some states need Deer insurance lol!

Oh hugs to you! I'm glad you are ok and I'm praying for that poor deer.

That's what I'm worried about......
How horrible was the whole insurance deal? Did they cover it? My dad says they will, but there's a lot of damage and I'm freaking out about the cost right before Christmas. I was originally thinking that it was just the body of the car (hood, bumper, grill, left panel, etc), but my X-husband took a peek under the bent hood and he says the air filter he can see is popped off. Not sure what else under there might be a mess too. (And the car is only a year old with 17K miles on it!!)

I do have to say though, that I am also very lucky because my annual inspection sticker on my car expired in November and I completely forgot to renew it. I did it this morning!! Phew! That's a moving violation where I live.

aww sweetie it is not your fault. even the most cautious driver could not prevent a deer running out in front of their vehicle. they are very fast and often dart out before you even have a chance to break. my sister monica has hit 3. she lives in the country out in mississippi...and there are deer everywhere- she is a very careful driver, but even she would tell you, there's nothing you can do when they run out in front of you. try not to blame yourself...accidents do happen i hope you are able to get your car repaired at a decient rate.

I´m so sorry about that......maybe we can pray for him to feel better..

I'm so sorry to hear about that!! I've never hit a deer, but I've had a few close calls! At least you were able to drive your car home
post #15 of 27
I saw a deer just a few nights ago on my way home. I stopped as it was in the road & it actually ran at my car! I was amazed, but hit my horn & it took off the other direction. I seriously wondered if the deer was going to hit my car.

I hope your insurance isn't too much trouble. After all, how were you supposed to know a deer felt like playing in traffic?

I cannot begin to tell you how close I've been to hitting one. There is a very large herd of deer in Wisconsin About 1.6 million!! Deer hunting took that down about 400,000 but still way to high. Vehicle/deer accidents are fairly common here. When bucks go in rut I avoid certain roads due to seeing too many deer!! In Wisconsin its usually covered under your comprehensive coverage-they should cover all but your deductible. Neil hit one in October with the truck (that goodness I asked for the car that day!) Just a small dent on the side of the box of the truck. We haven't made a claim yet though.
Hoping they can repair your vehicle quickly!!

How scary! I've come very close a couple times but thankfully did not hit one. They can really do a lot of damage to a car and it sounds like it did to yours. Try not to worry too much about the insurance - that's what it's there for and probably you will only need to pay your deductible.

My drive home from work takes me along some back roads and wooded areas and I drive very carefully, especially around sundown as that seems to be when they come out to eat.

Hope you are calmed down somewhat by the time you read this. Take care. I know how upset it must be to wonder how the poor deer is doing and how badly hurt he/she is, but it's in God's hands now. There's nothing you can do and it wasn't your fault.

That is very scary, Thank God you are ok.
Thank goodness you're OK. And I know it's tough not knowing what happened to the deer, but you did what you could. The closest call I ever had w/a deer was at high noon on one of the busiest roads in town -- I missed by mere inches.

don't worry too much about the insurance - it's pretty evident from the damage that it was unavoidable. I had a friend in high school that totalled his car because he swerved to miss the deer, and his insurance refused to pay because he couldn't prove the deer was actually there!

How frightening that must have been. The important thing is that you are OK. Hopefully the insurance won't be a hassle. You had no options at the time.

Feeling much much better this morning, but not looking forward to dealing with the insurance company today. Although I do have to admit my agent is a small town agent and has always been very helpful.

Now - do you want to hear something sick?? I told my X-boyfriend about it last night (as we are still very good friends) and he asked me to save the deer hair for his father. His father fly fishes and during the winter when he can't fish he makes his own flys. It's a real art from what I've seen, but he says his father would love to have the deer hair stuck to my bumper. I told him if he wants it he can come get it.
And I just saw an e-mail from him go out to his father.
"Dad, Lisa collected some deer hair for you -- the hard way" and he attached a picture of my front bumper

(At least he can make me laugh about this now)

Wow! Glad you're OK. I grazed a moose once, but didn't damage the car.

Sorry about hitting the deer. I would have freaked out. I ran over a Opposum one time and ended up having to pull over because I was crying to bad. Just the thought of taking somthing life like that. I know most people dont like Opposums but I was raised up helping raise them for my local wildlife center. And my parents currently have 2 that werent releasable. So all I could think of was Minnie and Belles (my parents oposums). Seeing there little faces and then hearing the crunch. I still cant get that sound out of my head.

Air filter is no biggie, most of the hose and the filter itself is rubber and plastic and components are pretty cheap. Your car can even function without one temporarily just fine. What I would worry about though is the radiator. Radiators are extremely fragile and are almost always mounted right smack in the front of the car behind the bumper. Leaky radiator = overheated (a.k.a. dead) engine. Would also check the battery for damage pronto, leaky batteries will burn holes in your frame, not to mention potentially wreck havoc to any electronics and hoses.

You didn't kill the deer? Tsk tsk, what a pity, you could've been dining on fresh venison! (sorry... I love venison).

Venison - yuck! If you want it - I can tell you where there's a deer that probably will be very easy to catch right now
As for the car - It appears that I have no leaks which is very good. So I don't think the radiator was damaged (since I also did drive it home and again last night and it wasn't even getting remotely warm). Also there is no evidence of any liquids in my driveway at all which is very promising.
Thanks for the advice though!

I did an early morning paper route, I could have hit one almost every night if I wanted to (if I had a truck, I may have, I like venison, but could shoot one, and probley could mow one down on purpose either)
Just recently I had one run into the side of me, I tried to swerve but a car was comming, so it hit my passanger door, it had a small scratch, and moved my mirror.
I have hit and killed a couple before though. One was little, I felt, kind of bad, but I had the cop tag it, and my brother cleaned it, so I felt bad, but full. I have almost hit moose, that is very scary!

I know how ya feel!!! Hitting a deer is soooo horrible!! I hit one a few yrs ago in the SUMMER(July). It just popped outta know where. And I was going about 65....totalled my car!! But of course insurance didnt think so So I had to pay a deductible and wait like a month for my car to get fixed. Last year my brother and his wife hit a deer in her car and that thing landed in their back seat!! That was REALLY scary for them. And it did total her car.....
Best of luck to ya sweetie.
