Hello everyone. I've actually posted a few times before introducing myself - sorry about that. I'm still exploring all the different message boards.

My name is Rina, I'm 26 years old and totally new to the experience of owning cats. We've gone a bit crazy, though, and gotten FOUR cats in the past five months! Our house is filled to the brim with cats and kids and dogs. We have four children, three girls ages 4, 3, and 2, and a 6 month old boy. We also have a female Irish Setter and have run a dog rescue off and on for about three years. We had never owned a cat until recently (husband was adamantly against it, and I never thought I was a "cat person") and we got our first cat purely by accident. A woman contacted us through our rescue needing to place five of her cats. We told her that we did not take in cats, but we happened to have a friend who'd been searching for some. My friend took four of them and we took one and then ONLY because she was a proven mouser (we live in the country and get field mice in the basement during the winter.) Even then, my husband wanted a guarantee that if she didn't prove her worth we would find her a new home! As it happens, she did prove her worth and a few months later, we adopted a second cat from a shelter (a male Maine Coon.) Unfortunately, as "cool" as he was to have around the house, he wasn't at all friendly. So I looked at other large breeds and a few weeks later, we adopted a female Ragamuffin. She is super friendly, but I still wanted a friendly Maine Coon!!! So just a few days ago my husband brought home another male MC from a breeder in Ohio who is much more extroverted than our poor shelter kitty. I can't believe how much I'm enjoying having cats!!! One of these days I would even love to add a male Ragdoll to our family. Who would have ever thought?! We're seriously starting to consider doing CAT rescue rather than DOG rescue!
I never would have dreamed of getting on a dog posting board, but I'm so excited about my cats, I just wanted to be able to share with others who would understand.
To introduce you briefly to our cats...

Molly - Our first cat, a 2yo female Siamese mix. Hates other cats and isn't terribly interested in people, but LOVES dogs. She is highly intelligent, "talks" all the time, and she is housebroken. I'm not kidding, she'll actually come to get me when she wants to go outside to potty, because she wouldn't DREAM of sharing a litter box with another cat.

Arek - Our 3yo male Maine Coon. His main job around the house is to hang around and look attractive. He does not enjoy a lot of petting (he will actually get up and walk away if you pet him), but does like to be in the same room with us and heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s quite the conversation piece! He weighs 20lbs right now and may get a little bigger by the time he's full grown.

Pipsessewa (Pipsi) - Our 4 year old Ragamuffin. She's the only real cuddler of the bunch. She follows me around the house and wants to be beside me most of the time. She loves to "knead dough" and loves attention.

Amad (? Still debating this name) - He's our most recent addition, 2yo male Maine Coon. He's too new to be able to say much about him, but he's definitely more friendly than Arek. Arek and Amad are both Hebrew names, Arek means "patience" and Amad means "persistence."

Maili - Our 2 year old female Irish Setter and "problem child." She has the typical loving, goofy Setter personality and is extremely co-dependant. We can't leave her in the house by herself because she has panic attacks. She is also an escape artist and can somehow get out of our METAL crate and leave the door locked behind her! We have yet to figure out how she does this. To top it all off, she gets extremely car sick, so we can't take her anywhere.
But she's a loving girl and I wouldn't take all the money in the world for her - problems and all.

Well, if you're still with me, thanks for reading! I hope to get to know you all better!

Rina

Wow, what a change in lifestyle for you!

Isn't it great when you realize that a cat's "worth" has nothing to do with his ability to hunt mice?

Wow, hi! Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ve only known one other person with our name… isnâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t it fun to say “hi Rena!†and be talking to someone else.

YES!!! Gosh, I never would have believed I would end up loving cats so much. Even the ones who arenâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t very sociable have wonderful personalities that just make me love them. I do hope that Amad becomes a cuddly cat, though. We only have one cat who wants anything to do with us, and thatâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s Pipsi. Itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s still too early to tell what Amad will be like, but I really REALLY hope heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ll be a love-bug. Poor Arek, weâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]re really working with him to help him to become more social. He seems to be doing well so far, and heâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s getting along really well with the new addition.

PS. To date, Molly is still the only cat we have who will catch a mouse. Arek is de-clawed (not by us!), I don't think Pipsi could catch a mouse if she tried, and I'm not sure what Amad would do if he ran in to one. So we now have four cats, and a basement that's still full of mice during the winter!

It really is. I have met 3 or 4 other people with the same name, but most of them have been spelt with an I not an e. My boyfriend knows another girl named Rina and its weird when he says something about her because I am like huh?

Well, we finally found a name for our new kitty we're all happy with! My husband knew someone named "Amad" so he never really liked that name. We decied on "Shachar" (pronounced "Sha-khar.") It's another Hebrew name and comes from Psalm 63:1: "O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is." The word "seek" used there is the Hebrew word "Shachar." There is a LONG story associated with why we chose that name, but I'd be happy to share it with anyone interested - just PM me. We also had to change our siggy, because it was too tall. Hopefully we have it right this time!

Hi there Rina - yes I can see your siggy, it's beautiful. You did a fantastic job getting your babies into your siggy.

Thank you so much for your kind words
, the two kitties in my siggy are Singapuras - their names are Lily and Tolstoy (Tolly) and they are half brother and sister - same Dad but different Mum cats.

Welcome, Rina and Family,

to TheCatSite and THANK YOU for rescuing/adopting your four feline family members (AND thinking about switching to CAT RESCUE -- you probably already know that far more cats than dogs are surrendered to shelters and AC&C's, and far more lose their lives than dogs, for various, all senseless and indefensible, reasons...so I sure hope you DO do cat rescue! CATS NEED US!)
We are 9! indoor-only, rescued, spayed/neutered felines, of whom Nicolas is the eldest at going on 17; Baby Su is the youngest, at just "terrible two"! We have our moments, but basically, we all get along together, and with enough continually-cleaned litter boxes, we all do just fine inside! and are safe from all the nasties, plus we never get FLEAS...

Look forward to seeing you all here (the Sticky's at the top of the page of posts tell how to post photos; and the talented artistes here are probably just waiting to do your very own siggies!) and chatting! And glad your husband "woke up and smelled the catnip", too -- hey, we're not ashamed to say it. CATS RULE!

Oh, thanks! I donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t have photoshop, so I just did the best I could with what I had. J Had to change it later, though… it was too tall!

I just went to a website to learn more about them… theyâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]re so cute!!! It sounds like they have great personalities, too!

<< THANK YOU for rescuing/adopting your four feline family members>>

Thanks, two of them were from breeders, though. Arek and Molly were the rescues.

Yes, weâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]re seriously considering it. The unfortunate thing is that cats are very difficult to find homes for. Itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s very sad. Weâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ve done some purebred cat rescue on occasion, but we have yet to jump into the mixes.

Dear Rina and Furbabies:

Well, I sure hope you DO do cat rescue, though -- it is so necessary, and while it is true that it is hard, it is up to all of us who do love cats to try to change this. Once upon a time, cats were the #1 companion animal here. I have my own feelings about all of the negative media attention and public attitudes toward cats in the past few years, and I won't print them here. But there ARE millions and millions of us who DO love cats, rescue cats, adopt cats, and walk the talk for cats. We are their champions. Let's all do our best for them!

Singapuras are gorgeous little cats -- I personally do not believe in the whole breeding thing, not while there are millions of cats needing loving homes and going without them -- but, having said that, I do love the looks of the little "drain cats" and have studied about them extensively on the Web. ALL of your cats are so lovely! But then, YOU KNOW THAT
