I have two cats, a 1.2 year old cat and a 0.6 year old kitten.

Both have the flu, and have had it for a while now... me and my Vet have been doing everything medically reasonable to keep this from getting chronic for life.

The older cat has a bacterial infection, so we're treating them both with anti-biotics just incase.

So he's (my Vet) told me that I have to try my best to keep the environment they live in as sterile as possible. I clean my room with fluids that kill all viruses/bacteria one day yes, one day no . Keep the windows open to make sure the room has ventilation, use anti-bacterial wipes and disinfectant sprays to clean the nasal discharge left by the cats and other sources of infection..

So really, i'm doing everything I know of..

My question is... is it ALL or NOTHING when it comes to being clean?

What I mean is.. take this analogy.. you have a heavily fortified castle that no army can infiltrate.. but then it is discovered that there's a secret passage way that the opposing army can enter through and this nullifies the whole security system subsequently causinge the whole castle to be destroyed...

So... my point is.. does my castle (attempts to keep my room clean) have to be 100% fail proof? Or is it really... the more I keep it clean, the better it is --- knowing that I can not possibly make sure the room is 100% sterile. Is it better than nothing?

So really I just wanna know if all my attempts of keeping my room clean are worth it despite the fact that I can not completely disinfect the room as i'd like to.

And any other suggestions on how I can keep my room sterile? Treat for a viral infection? Boost their immune system?

Thanks for your help, appreciate it.

Best of luck to all.

I don't think it is even possible to keep a room with two sick cats 100% sterile. It sounds like you are keeping it very clean, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. As for boosting their immune system, L-Lysine can help reduce viral replication. Normal doses for sick cats range from 500 mg to 1000 mg. You might also ask your vet about alpha-interferon. It too can help boost their immune systems. Good luck!

Thanks for your support and advice.

There's one thing I failed to mention that he's also asked me to do but was already doing it before he told me (yaay me lol) is give them multi-vitamin and mineral tables once daily.

The one I am using is called "acti-pet". So i'm not sure if Acti-Pet contains alpha-interferon and L-Lysine but i'll ask him on Monday about this and see what he says.

I guess, to be apart of this it's only natural we love our cats so much and im really tryin' to get them better! Money isn't even a question (i'm not wealthy by any means but if I have the money...i'll pay any amount I have to get them better).

It's just frustrating when you can't do more, and you just wanna do more.

It may have L-Lysine (though the ingredient list I just found doesn't say so), but probably doesn't have alpha-interferon--when I was giving my cat alpha-interferon, it had to be refrigerated, and it was mixed in an IV bag (though I gave it to him by mouth). Sometimes though, it could be just like a cold--only time will help them heal.
