I had my kitten Jelly Belly Bean (gosh he's 22-24 weeks old now, my memory isn't what it used to be) neutered today. All went well with him, I got the information about no feeding for up to two hours after I bring him home and no playing for 48 hours. Right now that doesn't seem to be a problem. When I first brought him home he couldn't move his rear legs at all (which didn't worry me at first because when I had my 5 year old son I couldn't feel my legs to walk after the anesthesia either). He slept for awhile and when I got up to leave he let out a pitiful cry and tried following me (I just wanted to grab a bite to eat and feed the kids). Needless to say I was a bad human Mommy and had my 13 year old make grilled cheese sandwiches so I could watch Jelly Bean). Anyway he has finally started walking around but he appears groggy and he is stumbling around (he looks like he had one too many). I brought him home 3 hours ago. Will he be back to his normal self soon? How much longer can I expect him to be groggy and stumbling (poor baby, I carried him to the litter box but he laid down face first to pee. When he went to get up he fell right back in it. While it was funny in a ha-ha sort of way I am still worried). Am I just being on overanxious furry Mom?

Sounds like he is still under the anesthesia. It could take another couple of hours before he picks up. If he is still like this tomorrow, on the phone to the vet, you must get.

You might want to confine him to a quiet comfy area with a litterbox with something not as rough as litter, like newspaper or something. That way he is kept calm and quiet and can just sleep it off. Also if he has to pee, the litterbox is right there and if he sits in it, nothing will stick to him.

If you brought him home right out of sugery, he's still in recovery time. IMO the vet should have not sent him home so soon. Neutering is not major surgery - they usually come out of it quicker.

Perhaps he just had a slight bad reaction to things. I'd confine him to a small area where he can't hurt himself. Do you have a large cage or dog kennel? If not, use the bathroom.

He should be fine by the morning

Thank you all so much! I had my son monitering everything for me last night as I sat by JellyBean's side. He wouldn't let me out of his site for long. As I typed my message last night I had to have my 13 year old sit with him until I could go right back up. Every time I tried to leave him he tried following me, bless his little heart.
JellyBean woke me up at about 5:30 this morning purring and walking normally! I even got him to finally eat a little bit. I am so happy. He seems to be doing so much better this morning. He is still sleepy and wants no one but me (makes sense, he wants his Mommy). I am keeping him in my bedroom where it is safer for him. This way he has less interaction with the kids (especially the 5 year old) and the dog. His litter box, kennel, and water/food bowl are in there with him. Right now he is sleeping on my pillow.

I figure I'll feed him every two hours in small amounts, that seem right to you all? The vet warned me feeding him too much might make him sick at this point.
Once my son read your responses for me I was able to worry a little less.
You all know how it is. We worry about our babies. I'll make sure the vet makes a note of his reaction. That way we know if he ever has to go under again for anything. Oy vey was I worried! *whew*
Hugs!

Glad to hear that Jelly Bean is doing better. Small amounts of food is best for now, just until you know how he's going to handle it
