Carrhart

There is a stary around the woods at my house. we named him carrhart. aka carri. he is a grey tabby. he will het about 3 feet from us then run. we feed him and are nice to him but nothing seems to work. i want to get him to the vet to check him out. any ideas on how to train him??

the easiest to catch shy strays is to catch them in a trap. Perhaps you can borrow a human trap. But it is also possible to rig up a common transporter box into a human trap, with a little creative thinking. With food inside as bait...

He isnt that very shy, so it doesnt matter he understand you are quite near, with a small rope in hand....

Why you need to do a check up? Is he ill?

Or do you plan to take him to you as fosterhome - and want to do a check up before?? Excellent. Do you have own homecats? A friendly homecat makes it easier to foster a shy semiferal. But do have him in a quarantene room at first, till the vaccines are working and and deworming is over.

Do you plan to let neuter him at the same time??

Observe, if he is ill he may be easier to foster him. The "window" for easy socialisation opens again a little when they are ill and you help them.

Catbabe....if you are planning to take him in to be checked...he should also be neutered. That way you can prevent another female cat from getting accidentally pregnant. I would recommend you borrow a humane trap from your local humane society.

Obviously he'll be scared in a new environment. The most important thing is that he is confined to one room initially. He'd need to be in a separate room, probably for some time. A guest bedroom or a computer work room are perfect. But it has to be some place that you or your mom (or both of you, or whoever) is willing to spend time doing stuff. Ironing, reading, working on a computer, knitting, sitting and watching TV - whatever. But your presence is required for kitty to get used to (all of) you.

Again, the other ingredient is simply time. The socialization process begins by ignoring kitty but being in his presence, and providing him/her hiding places, a clean litterbox, food, and water.

Just remember, Cats are not genetically programmed to make people happy. They are genetically programmed to keep watch over their territory. So changing a cat's territory is traumatic to kitty. Their initial reaction is fear - they don't automatically understand they're being "helped." And their territory will be the box in which they're hiding. As they feel safe, they will slowly expand that territory. But under-the-bed (or desk or whatever) may be kitty's territory for some time. He'll venture out for food, water and to go to the bathroom. But until he's learned that the human in the same space with them is not any kind of threat, he may keep to a very small territory. The more he trusts, the more he'll expand that space.

Our feral rescues (rescued as kittens) did not like to be petted - which we never understood. It made them purr - but it was like they didn't want to enjoy themselves. Now that they're four, they can't get enough of a brush, and having their cheeks petted almost all day would be heaven. But it was something that literally took years - even though they'd sleep in our bed, rub up against us, and generally enjoy being with us from very early on.

I want to train him but i dont have an empty room. quilt sleeps in the only empty one. any ideas

I Tried getting him into the pet taxi but we would get half way in then leave.
any ideas??

That's why you need to use a humane trap and some very tasty food (like deboned/deskinned KFC). Once he trips the trap, he can't get out.

this is why I wrote you CAN use a common transport Box/carrier, but you must use some creative thinking.
(A human trap is of course best).

Ie you must rig it. A rope in the door, so you can shut the door with the rope when he is inside... It is not enought to shut the door a little - he will probably throw himself at the door when he realises he is trapped.
You must also fasten the box so it is steady.

If you dont have a extra quarantene-room, a dog crate (clean!) is quite useful.

ps. shy semiferals are usually not aggressive. The big exception is when they are catched. Watch out, he might desperately try to get loss, may both try to scrach and bite.
Ie catch him, let him be in the box/trap. Take it to the vet if you do.

And the room /crate is quite nice, with litter, water, food, laying place, somewhere to hide (cardboard box turned aside, with blanket/old towel in it will do)

carri is now in a pet taxi with a stray kitten i found. carri was making sure no one hurt the kitten.
he is trying to bite me. he is at the vet with me now. he is gonna get fixed today

He must be a wonderful guy. In this highly stressed situation he is kind to the kitten...
He will be a first rate homecat with time.

His trying to bite you when captured was expected, so dont worry about it. (but I do hope you had gloves on you! I forget to mention it... )

Ok well carri is fixed Phew i had a terrible day today. i found that the kitten is sick and carri is trowing himself aginst the wall and so i put him in the pet taxi and he sat there groning in pain so i put on my srcubs and went into work.
the kitten has a cat flu and carri is catching it so i put the kitten on meds and carri on high doses vidamin c.
and so the kiiten and carri both are at the vet with me right now.
