A co-worker of mine was diagnosed with leukemia several years ago. Luckily, he had a matched bone marrow donor and today he is healthy and attending medical school. He and his family started an organization to raise money for research and to help families affected by leukemia. That's where I'd donate my $1000.

St. Judes is soo wonderful. When my cousin lost her baby this summer (as some of you may remember me posting about), we took out a fund in the little ones memory at St. Jude to help the other children in her memory.

Good for him! Attending medical school - what a lucky man, I'm sure he counts his lucky stars every night!
Its always great to hear about people who help raise money for such things after they've been thru it themselves.

There are a lot of them struggling just to make ends meet- and the new ones are not allowed to have a second job on the side for the first year and a half on the force. (i still think that's a crummy rule.) At the moment, several of the officer's wives are expecting babies any month now. The wives are working several jobs just to make ends meet and help their hubbies out. I would love to help them out by using the money to buy supplies for them and help them set up a nursery and whatever else they need- i would also love to get people in my local area to donate to the cause and possible start a mutual fund or some form of investment for the officers and their families.
Colin is a smart man to have invested his money wisley!
I think your choice would be wonderful, I cannot believe they aren't allowed to have a 2nd job the 1st few years, especially when money is so tight

Thats a great idea, there are so many food banks in this area as well that are always in need.

You can send families in need livestock and animals that will provide them with things like milk and eggs. Enough for their family to eat, and to sell and make money for themselves. You can even send a family who wants it a hive of honeybees so that they can raise honey for a living. Check out the website. Its a really interesting charity.

They operate based on the proverb, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
Wow, I've never heard of them before - what an awesome organization!

And if they don't do it who will? I have a very hard time still seeing this issue still so huge.. People still don't get it.
It's cold here even and I just got home from petsmart and all the way home I kept thinking I know there out here and they shouldn't be.
They can't ask for help they need someone to care
Thats so true, I wish I could care for all the poor babies out there with out loving homes

I've been on the Tree House website that you've posted previously, and it really is a great organization!

Isn't it just aweful though.I think it is about the most horrible rule possible- they did it because they don't want the new officers to have a "conflict of interest" with another job....but they have enough conflicts when they can't make ends meet. I am soo glad that Colin invested wisely when he had the extra $$ in the navy. He took over a 60-70% pay cut leaving as a lt. in the navy to do the police thing. At least we're lucky though and he got his house and other investments when he was in the navy- it would have been impossible for him to have done that on what he's making now. I feel soooo bad for his fellow officers and their families- they make sooo much of a difference out there every single day keeping the streets safe and taking care of people (Bartlett is one of the few police preciencts i like- I hate the Memphis one- they're almost all slimy- but the bartlett guys actually care, so that makes a difference). It's so sad to see people like cops, fire fighters, emts, teachers -people that really make a difference and that our society depends on- go without and get paid soo poorly when their jobs are so significant. If i had the extra money- it would definitely go to that.

I watched this Oprah today too. The only rule was that you had to spend all 1000 bucks on a perfect stranger and video tape your give aways.

Where I live in my city, there is an incredible divide of wealthy and much poverty and not enough housing. I would have taken my 1000 bucks and fundraised as much as I could after that by going to local businesses and hopefully raise a bit of money. I already write letters to my city council about the lack of homeless shelters, so I'd hope that with the money and items raised (potentially) that we could find some grants and such to open another shelter......That would be my dream giveaway.

If there was like a one day limit, I would donate the 1000 bucks to S.E.S.H. which all money goes towards helping inner city families, youth and schools.

When I attend the Chicago Flower Show every March there is a vendor Rich's FoxWillow Pines out of Woodstock,IL who sells small dwar conifer seedlings and other plants. If you write your check/pay cash to Heifer International you get the plants for "free". He usually has something in his catalog about them too.
