I have an "ex-feral" cat that I have had since she was about 6-7 weeks old. She is about 10 1/2 months old now. I caught her as a baby. She had never been touched by a human before(I talked to the owner of the stray mama cat) and was VERY frightened! Anyways, even though I've had her for so long, she is still scared of everyone and everything. There was a point in time when she was "normal" when she was a kitten, but that was VERY temporary and now she is crazy again. Anyways, I didn't really notice until she was about 4-5 months old that she licks her lips alot.

I mean, now, she licks her lips constantly! Especially if she's scared or thinks she's cornered. She does it more when my hubby is home because she's really scared of him. She's not scared of me at all. Anyways, one day my hubby wasn't home and I was preparing some wetfood for the cats and I heard what sounded like a "ticking" sound. It was driving me up the walls and so I looked around and found out the noise was my cat licking her lips like crazy! All I heard was the "smack, smack, smack, smack" of her lips. Almost like dripping water.

It took me awhile but I think I figured out why she did it...I don't think I had ever prepared wet food for her before when my hubby wasn't home. She is ussually hiding when I prepare the food so she hardly gets any. She was going crazy with anticipation of getting wet food and couldn't stop drooling! How funny is that!

Anyways, I just wanted to know if anybody else out there with a cat that always licks its lips. Also, why do they do it? Is it fear/nervousness?(like with humans?) Also, is it something to worry about?

There's only been a problem because of it once: My husband was putting an old borken stove outside about a week ago and when he opened the door(mind you he had a VERY heavy stove in his hands.) the cat tried to make a run for it. Naturally my hubby tried to shut the door as fast as possible(she moves like lightening!you know how fast those feral cats can run!LOL!) and he managed to get it shut, but she didn't stop and ran head first into the door! *BAM!* (That had to hurt!)

Anyways, my husband manageed to grab her(wasn't hard since she practically knocked herself out!) and he checked her out to make sure she was alright. She did manage to knock her mouth hard enough to cause a wee bleeding above her front tooth, but that's it. Anyways, he put her down and let her run off and hide. When I came home she had managed to lick her mouth shut! I mean, I guess she was really nervous about the whole ordeal and she licked her mouth so dry it sealed shut! I managed to "unglue" her mouth with a wet rag and kept an eye on her the rest of the day.(was a sunday evening so I couldn't have taken her to the vet, they were all closed). She's better now, but that was really weird.

Well, now that I've told my whole life's story(LOL) I'll leave a little bit of room for you all to answer.
