I don't travel much, but about 4 years ago I went away for a week and had my nephew and his girl friend (both early 20's) stay at my place and look after my cats. Several years ago I had a friend's teenage daughter stay at my place to look after them.

I find that young people (teens or young adults living at home) often feel stifled by their parents and while they are old enough to live on their own they may not be able to afford it. So it's a win-win situation if you can find a relative or a co-workers kid who might like some time apart from their family.

For my nephew I left him $200.00 to buy groceries or rent movies etc. He was thrilled and he did a good job too.

I've used that solution, too, and made sure that all the instruction manuals for the DVD player, VCR, and stereo were in plain sight, and the fridge stocked with goodies.

I would be furious

I hope the kitties are ok, I have often left mine for a few days with enough food and left a tap dripping just in case they run out of water - but not that long. Hopefully your landlord/friend can check on them and feed them.

I also had a neighbour who used to pay me to stay at her place when she went on holiday, I watched the dog and made enough noise / light for people not to know she was away. Worked for both of us, I got some space and she didn't have to board the dog

Well, Ian made it back this evening and all of the kitties are fine. Other than the fact that Mr. Mouse met his gorey demise in the fountain again today (how sweet of them, right?
), everything was in order and totally fine.

So, we were lucky, but I'm not trusting anyone but my coworkers at Tree House or my vet to watch them, ever again. Well, I trust my dad, too, but it's unrealistic to ask him to take the El out to my place every day, so I usually only ask him to be "on call" in case of emergencies. Unfortunately, he wasn't at work today, so my kitties had to wait for Ian. Poor things.

I'm glad they are o.k.
I would NEVER speak to that person again.
A woman that I know, had a "friend" come and watch her dogs while she attended a funeral. She was gone for 10 days. The friend NEVER EVER went over there. This was over the Summer and she lives in Georgia. When she got home, ALL of her dogs, but 1 were dead. The one that was alive, died at the Vets.
So, I don't trust to many with my pets either. My adopted Daughter is who I get to come down and care for our babies when we leave.

I'm glad your kitties are OK. I would be more than furious with your "friend"....I know your kitties mean more than the world to you.....

I am cat sitting for a woman I met only after she called me(a complete stranger) asking me to cat sit. My vet reccomended me. She & I talked for 2 hours before she was sure she knew I was perfect!
I go to her house 2x a day, but I knew it was going to be raining(& freezing) tonight, so I went in mid afternoon to play with the kits so they didn't get too bored.

Yeah, this particular friend was someone who had some issues she had a tough time dealing with 2 years ago, but seemed to be doing much better and even adopted out a cat with her partner (whom I don't know well at all) from Tree House.

When I was asking around, she was the only person who could guarantee me they'd be in town. Since it seemed like she had both recovered AND grown up, I decided to give her another chance. Plus, they not only gush about and fawn over this cat, but also post pictures of their cat online all the time, and he looks really good. So, I figured, knowing how she felt about her kitty and how things have seemed better with her, I'd let her watch them THursday-Sunday. It was going well at first, but then some of her made-up drama got the best of her, and Ian had to cut his visit short and go home to cover for me AND I had to be panicked all day and frantically calling everyone.

So, basically, this girl sort of blew her last chance with me (she has legitimate issues, but mostly, she's just immature) and that's that. No use being mean to her, but I certainly will never ever trust her with anything ever.

I'm glad you were able to make it home to them. I'm so sorry your "sitter" did such a horrible thing! I'd be very upset.

I'm relieved to hear your kitties are ok.
You're more forgiving than I would be, I don't know how this friend could ever look you in the eyes again.

Yeah, I don't see how going off on her or being mean is really going to make the situation any better. The best thing I can do forf my kitties is to find a better way to deal with travel situations from now on.

Even though bringing them with on car trips is extremely difficult and stresses them out, it might just be the safest and more secure thing to do from now on. So we shall see.

I've managed to find a very reliable cat sitter thru my vet's office. I pay her $10/visit and the first couple of times I used her, she would call me from my home phone to my cell phone to prove she was in my apt. taking care of the girls. I found that very reassuring.

I'm happy your babies are ok.

Noone would treat my cats like that and then expect to be friends with me. I'd probably end up yelling until I was hoarse. I am NOT forgiving when it comes to the well being of my animals.
I hope at least in the beginning you had a nice vacation.

Its good t read that the cats are ok after all that went on. My cat sitter of several years has now retired and lives in FL for part of the year and has her house for sale locally and will be moving 1hr away. So I have to find a new person and I'm thinking my neighbor's children can come over but they might stress a couple of the cats out. Its a pain finding someone to trust!!

So glad everything worked out ok, Allie! I've always had my sister come and look after the kitties if I'll be gone, and I always have her call me when she gets there- Jinx screaming in the background lets me know if she's there for sure
if it wan't for my sis, I'd never go anywhere
