Our Ella, until a few days ago, has been in good health. She's three years old and I must say very shy; no one has seen her only us! Well all of a sudden her tail has drooped to the ground and is never up for example when she is happy, playing, ready to eat, etc. Her litter box is in good shape and she doesn't seen to be in any discomfort. Any suggestions or do you think a trip to the vet is in order? Thanks very much.

Does it just kind of hang there like Carly's in the picture below? You may want to take her in and have a vet look at it. Cats can get tail-pull injuries and can be quite severe affecting the bladder and bowels. While Ella's doesn't sound as serious, you should have her looked at.

Thanks for the quick responses. - Question #1 - yes she can move her tail and her tail looks just like Carly's - just hanging - although she can lift it a little. We have an 8:30 appointment first thing Monday morning so I'll let you know how things turn out.

This is a wonderful site and I'm thankful I found it.

Carly's tail was injured before we got her. She was adopted from a rescue so we don't know her history. After noticing her tail problem, I did some searching on the internet and learned some about tail-pull injuries. We had x-rays done when we figured out something was wrong with her tail. Her back leg had been broken and healed without any medical help.

Our experiences with Carly. The vet said that she still has good blood flow and can move it enough to use the litter box so we didn't amputate it. But she does have problems with poop sticking there so we have to check her every once in awhile and have to clean the area with a wet wash cloth.

All went well with the vet visit this morning - sounds like we might have over-reacted although the vet said there was a little sensitivity at the upper end of the tail. The vet gave her a good exam, an antibiotic was prescribed and for a little under $100. she got a clean bill of health, including having her nails clipped! Although she totally ignores me and is daddy's little girl I'm happy with the good result. Thanks for your kind thoughts.

I don't think you overreacted. Tail pull injuries can be quite serious and it is good to have a vet look her over to make sure she had good blood flow in her tail.

I'm glad to hear she is doing well (I also have 3 daddy girls who only pay attn to me when dad's not around
)
