My husband is waaay too smart and always figures out his Christmas gifts. I've had to resort to all kinds of tricks to try to surprise him! Once, he saw a small CORNER of a price sticker that didn't get thrown away while I was wrapping, and he immediately knew what store it was from, and what it was. It's uncanny, he can look at the shape of the present and know what it is!

I've had to resort to putting his gift in a bigger box, stuffing it, and adding a jar with dried beans so when he shakes the box, he can't figure it out. That doesn't work anymore, he just calls them "rattlers," and knows what's in the box anyway.

I just got him a Nintendo Wii and some extras... I lucked out by going to Future Shop for a movie and they had just gotten 30 consoles in. I couldn't leave to get cash from my savings, couldn't use debit because we record those right away, so I had to think fast and put it on the credit card, then went to the bank and got a money order, then sent the payment expedited (it's a U.S. card). He's not expecting a Wii because they are impossible to get here on the island, so I'm going to wrap a small box containing a note that says his REAL present is under the bed!

I'm hoping a statement doesn't get sent before they receive the payment...

Does anyone else have to be so tricky to surprise someone? Would you share some tricks?

Cheers, from

Thats funny
switch the presents out, too. Put his name on someone else's present and let him try to figure that out!

Other way around - BF has to try really hard to surprise me. It's not his fault, and it's not mine, it's just the way my brain works.

The first time I saw an episode of Stargate SG1 I guess the exact line T'lk would say next, just after watching a few minutes. It was one of those key lines in the story, and it was just obvious what would be said - and how that character would say it.

At the end of season 1 of Babylon 5 (I was watching them on video), I guessed the major plot twist that happens at the end of season 3. I floored the friend whose videos they were (I was just joining in as he re-watched them).

It's just the way my brain works - excellent pattern matching skills (it results in faults in the brain too - I'm terribly, terribly superstitious).

My solution is now to pretend I can't guess, because he tries soooo hard to delight me. He doesn't know it, but that's the real gift I give him every year.

My mom use to hide the presents up until a few days before. She had the "easy to find" spot and the "next to impossible" spot.

still to this day I can't figure out where the "next to impossible" spot is...I think its the attic (they had a door to it in their room), but she won't budge...despite all of us being out of the house.

I have lots of hiding spots for Christmas presents so DH won't find them. Under some of our dressers are a bit of space. My root cellar in the basement where I keep my potatoes and such. Behind the towels in the linen closet. Something small-put it in the tampon box. I've got lots of ideas for places !!
I have to do creative wrapping to as DH gets tools for Christmas-its kind of hard to wrap clamps unless you wrap some pieces of lumber with them.

One year my siblings and I accidently found one of my mom's hiding places. At first, we didn't realise what it was (we lost something under a day bed, and when we stuck our hands in to get it, we ended up pulling out all these really weird bits and bobs); of course, after finding two different unopened things of teen spirit (my younger sister and I were just hitting 'that age'), it dawned on us: stocking stuffers!

We stopped looking, put everything back, and the four of us agreed not to tell mom and not to look in there again, because we'd have felt really bad spoiling mom's Christmas.

My husband doesn't try to guess, but he's good at disguising things for me...so good luck with that...But, when I was a kid I used to think my grandmother was magical because she shook everything and said what it was...My poor Poppy!
